Duke Treats Dicky V To 13 3's In 89-78 Win Over Carolina
Your college basketball roundup when anything noteworthy happens ...

Ty Loss-on I credit the Dukies for shooting lights out last night -- 13 for 29 from three-point range -- but if Tar Heels point guard Ty Lawson plays it's a completely different ball game.

Dick Vitale returned to broadcast and was treated with arguably the Blue Devils best performance all season. This win gives Duke a nice lead in the ACC and a shot at a #1 seed in March, but I'm still won't be penciling in a long tourney run. The shots were falling and UNC's third string point guard offered up far too many assists to the wrong team. What happens when the three-ball isn't falling?

One detail that was refreshing last night: Dukies kept the flops to a minimum. Have you noticed - I'm sure you have - that Duke doesn't even try the flopping all that often on the road?

Pat Knight still 902 wins behind his dad Baylor is a good team (17-4), but it's an 0-1 start for the younger-Knight led Red Raiders. I hope this move to get Pat a better chance works out, but I don't think it will. At least not at Texas Tech.

Will Bobby coach again? Dicky V insisted last night during the Duke-Carolina game that Knight wasn't done coaching if the right opportunity came about. Right opportunity = anywhere but Lubbock, TX. I don't blame him, how do you get excited about that atmosphere or lack thereof.

Do you think he'll coach again and where?

Break up the Huskies Who's been the hottest team in the country over the last two week? UConn.

The hate Eric Gordon bowl highlights tonight's slate. We're just about to that time when college hoops viewing becomes mandatory.

I was going to try to argue that Duke's best performance was against Wisconsin but they only made 11 3's in that game.  You're right about Duke's 3 point shooting though.  They could beat any team any night and lose to any team any night.  They're definitely not the team you want to picking to go too far in the tournament.

I have to disagree a little bit that Duke is completely one-dimensional and will depend solely on the 3-ball.   38% of their shots are 3's, which is 83rd worst in the nation, but they are 16th-best in 2-pt FG%, so it's not like they don't have the skills to make baskets inside the arc.  And with people knowing how much they shoot from behind the arc, that opens up the lane to drives from guys like Nelson and Henderson, which are both very effective.  Their defense has also been excellent and they play pretty hard, although they are annoying as hell.  And oh yeah, they have one loss and beat a pretty good UNC team at their place, albeit without Ty Lawson.

I'm not sure what people's definitions of going far in the tournament are (to me, it's making the sweet sixteen, as everything after that is a complete crapshoot), but I think Duke has a really nice recipe for success this season in the tourney.

Carolina was off their game last night and two of the biggest scoring contributers, Wayne and Danny, have both been off for sometime now. The Frasor injury is bigger than some fans initially thought. Lawson goes down quite easily because he is all over the floor and when he is not playing, there is only one active point on the team. When you play at the pace Carolina does, no way Q can play 32+ minutes effectively. I would be worried about the Clemson game if their entire team wasn't injured.

There continues to be strong rumblings that Kelvin Sampson is in serious danger of losing his job at Indiana. The word is that the NCAA is digging deep into his shenanigans after his thumbing his nose at them with the phone call debacle. Wouldn't it be something if Knight pulled this move with the intention of returning to the Hoosiers?

That would be funny, awesome, and suck all at the same time.
