ESPN pulls Hank WIlliams Jr.'s opening from MNF

Hank Williams Jr. opening not shown on MNF following Obama comments

Hank Williams Jr.’s classic Monday Night Football anthem was nowhere to be heard yesterday after the country singer famous for the line “Are you ready for some football?” used an analogy to Adolf Hitler in discussing President Barack Obama.

ESPN, in a statement, said: "While Hank Williams, Jr. is not an ESPN employee, we recognize that he is closely linked to our company through the open to Monday Night Football. We are extremely disappointed with his comments, and as a result we have decided to pull the open from tonight's telecast."

Williams issued a statement through his publicist, saying: "Some of us have strong opinions and are often misunderstood. My analogy was extreme -- but it was to make a point. I was simply trying to explain how stupid it seemed to me -- how ludicrous that pairing was. They're polar opposites and it made no sense. They don't see eye-to-eye and never will. I have always respected the office of the president."

Williams, whose song "All My Rowdy Friends" has been the "Monday Night Football" theme on both ABC and ESPN since 1991, said on "Fox and Friends" that he thought House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner playing golf with President Obama "would be like Hitler playing golf with (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu ... In the shape this country is in?"

Told by anchor Brian Kilmeade that he didn't understand the analogy, Williams said: "I'm glad you don't, brother, because a lot of people do. They're the enemy."

Asked who the enemy was, Williams said: "Obama. And Biden. Are you kidding? The Three Stooges."

Boehner played golf with Obama in June at the height of the national budget debate in Washington, D.C.

And turning the conversation back to the topic at hand...

ESPN announced this morning that All My Rowdy Friends has been permanently banished from the MNF broadcast: http://news.yahoo.com/hank-williams-jr-monday-night-football-143501411.html

My favorite part of the story is Hank's cagey PR move (sarcasm fully intended) of announcing he was pulling his song from ESPN after the network took it off the air....

As for why many don't like the current administration maybe it's because of his incompentence and inability to care for the general population because he's far too busy taking care of those that will finance his reelection campain.  I saw a sign recently that pretty much says it all.  "IF YOU VOTED FOR OBAMA TO PROVE YOUR NOT A RACIST, VOTE AGAINST HIM NOW TO PROVE YOU'RE NOT AN IDIOT."

But once again, this is not the issue here. Censorship in any form should never be tolerated.

The other bozo? I would take that to mean you think Obama is also a bozo. In that i will agree. But the old worn out "I inherited this mess" excuse won't work anymore.  Besides, Bush wasn't in Congress and never voted to submit any bills that drove the economy into the dumpster.  Obama not only voted on many of the issues that caused this mess, he signed them into law once he was elected.  Granted you can't cure decades of greed and self serving laws in a few years but he's not even tried. All he's done is submit us to his own set of self serving rules and driven the economy further into ruin.  The bottom line here however isn't about any of this. It's about ESPN using censorship most likely in fear of reprisals from the Obama administration.  I can't and won't endorse any form of censorship for any reason.  ESPN can shove their networks up their behinds unless they appologize for their Gestapho tactics.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add that while Hanky boy may not have been an employee per se of ESPN, there was most definitely a contract between the two entities, which probably included language concerning engaging in activities that would place ESPN in a negative light.  This is where ESPN would clearly have had the right to do exactly what they did.

You are quite correct Cactus Jack, but Hank is not an employee of ESPN and hence, the network merely exercised their right of free speech and chose to not use his song as the opener for one of their programs.  Hank is indeed free to speak his mind but, when his opinions reflect poorly on a business partner, that partner is perfectly free to alter their course as they see fit.

Yeah, I completely understand how that works.  I was just responding to the statement that the First Amendment only protects you from the government and not the people cutting your checks.  All of our rights that are protected by the Bill of Rights are supposed to protect us from government intrusion and from individuals and organizations trampling on us.  Each one (some more so than others), have come under considerable scrutiny, and each generation, it seems, tries to interpret them differently.  Regardless, they do not exist to stop only the government from F'n with us.  I was simply trying to clarify that point,

Now, I'm off my intellectual kick. Can I go back to just being a plain old smarta$$ again?

I'm not surprised by the over reaction of ESPN who after all is owned by ABC.  That's the same network that has forbidden their news personnel to wear American Flag lapel pens to avoid offending anyone.  Say what you want to Hank, this is still America. At least it is for a few more years till Obama completes his mission.  Screw Obama, offend him all you like.  I'll watch you sing anyday but won't watch ESPN till you are back on the air.
