FanIQ | Sports Rumors, Gossip, Blogs, News & Discussion ForumsPhiladelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles is sidelined with a concussion and will have to go through the league mandated protocol for such injuries before he can be cleared for play, coach Chip Kelly confirmed on Monday.
Foles suffered a head injury in the Sunday’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys and left the game, opening the door for rookie fourth-rounder Matt Barkley’s first action of the regular season. It remains unclear whether Foles will be available for this Sunday’s showdown against the New York Giants and the Eagles’ likely won’t much to say on that until later in the week.
“It didn't look like he was injured until the last play," Eagles coach Chip Kelly said of Foles on Monday. "I think he was off a little bit. His feet weren't set on a couple of his throws. There were times our guys were open and he couldn't get them the ball.”
“I saw Nick after the game, he seems like he’s doing well,” continued Kelly. “There’s a protocol and a system you go through before he’s cleared. He says he feels good so we’ll see how it goes as the week progresses.”
The second-year pro Foles had been starting for the Eagles since replacing Michael Vick in that role during the team’s Week 6 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Michael Vick has been out the last two weeks due to a hamstring injury he suffered against the Giants in Week 5. Under such circumstances the Eagles’ starting quarterback this Sunday against the Giants remains unknown.
Barkley struggled in last week’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys, completing just 11-of-20 passes for 129 yards and throwing interceptions on all three drives the fourth quarter.
If the Eagles have their choice, Vick will return to the starting role in Sunday’s game. Kelly said that Vick worked out before last week’s loss to the Cowboys, and it seemed that he was moving in the right direction towards recovery. However, Kelly cautioned that Foles’ injury doesn’t necessarily push Vick into a position to start this week.
“It’s all based on what his health is. We’ve listened to Mike the whole time and we’ll continue to listen to Mike,” Kelly said. “Just cause one guy got hurt that doesn’t make another guy get healthy quicker.”
If Vick isn’t healthy by Sunday, Barkley will be next in line to start against the Giants.
