Tom Gamble returns to his NFL roots in Philly, this time being hired by the Philadelphia Eagles as the Vice President of player personnel, the team announced on Wednesday. His father was a former Philadelphia Eagles’ president (1986-1995), while Tom Gamble himself started off his NFL career as a assistant for the team’s personnel department (1988-1994).
Tom Gamble will report directly to Philadelphia Eagles general manger Howie Rosemen, while his work will be distributed across both college and pro personnel departments.
After spending the last past seasons as the San Francisco 49ers over a combined eight season stint with the team, Tom Gamble move to Philadelphia to replace former Eagles Vice President of player personnel Ryan Grigson, who left for a general manager opening with the Indianapolis Colts. Tom Gamble’s last two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers were productive as the team made an NFC Championship title berth in 2011 and reached the Super Bowl in 2012. The San Francisco 49ers also combined for 18 Pro Bowl selections during the stretch.
"Since Ryan Grigson left to become the general manager of the Colts, we've been looking for the right person to fill his spot, and we are excited about what Tom can bring to the team," said Howie Roseman. "Tom and I have had a great relationship over the years and I know he’s excited to come home…He's not only a talented evaluator but also a good man and the type of person you want as a part of your team."
The 49-year-old Tom Gamble has combined 25 years of NFL experience working in college and pro scouting departments, contract negotiation and even taking a shot at coaching. During his time in Philadelphia, Tom Gamble previously dabbled with college scouting administrator, area scout, contract negotiator, and later director of pro scouting opportunities.
“He had a great run in San Francisco and they have been very successful over the last few years,” continued Howie Roseman. “He will jump right in with our group and get working on free agency and the draft.”
Following his earlier run in Philadelphia, Tom Gamble signed up as the New York Jets defensive assistant/quality control coach (1995-96), before serving a single year as the Baltimore Ravens’ pro scout (1997). Then Tom Gamble moved to Indianapolis for a college scout opening, remaining there from 1998-2004.
Tom Gamble has helped build 11 playoffs team rosters, four with the Philadelphia Eagles, five with the Indianapolis Colts and two with the San Francisco 49ers.
