Frank Beamer has lifted Virginia Tech into a football power because of his strict attention to special teams, particularly blocking kicks and punts. Beamer got a little taste of his own medicine this afternoon in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The Pirates T.J. Lee blocked a Hokies punt with 1:52 left and took it to the house to put East Carolina up 27-22 for good. Skip Holtz was close to pulling the upset a year ago in Blacksburg, this year is finished the deal.
I remain confused about Beamer's decision to redshirt sophomore quarterback Tyrod Taylor and stick solely with Sean Glennon. The senior brings experience and a passing threat, but Taylor brings Michael Vick athleticism and the ability to create yards out of nothing. That could have been used today. My guess is Taylor won't be redshirted all year if this keeps up. Glennon passed for just 123 yards and three two interceptions.
Most of the Hokies points came off turnovers and special teams, as usual, but they needed more.
Not exactly a Appalachian State type upset, but we'll take it on Day 1.
