Blog Photo - Ed Carpenter Wins the Pole for the Indianapolis 500With the crowd at Indianapolis Motor Speedway cheering on their local hero, owner-driver and Indianapolis native Ed Carpenter put his #20 Fuzzy's Vodka machine on the pole for the 97th running of the Indy 500. Carpenter was one of the nine that participated in the final shootout for the pole, and his 228.762 mph average could not be caught by the rest of the field.

Carpenter was the decided underdog in the Fast Nine Shootout, given that he was the only car that wasn't owned by either Roger Penske and Michael Andretti. All three of Penske's cars and all five of Andretti's made the shootout. Will Power was the quickest in the initial qualifying session, but couldn't hold on to that speed for the Fast Nine and will start 6th.

Carpenter is joined on the front row by Andretti Autosport rookie Carlos Munoz, who has been very fast all month, and Marco Andretti, who will make his first front row at Indy. Overall, 24 qualified for the 500 yesterday. Nine spots will be filled today. With Katherine Legge joining the entry list in a third car at Sam Schmidt Motorsports, there are 10 cars and drivers trying to get in. One of them will go home.
