The Edmonton Oilers hosted the Anaheim Ducks at the Rexall Place and even though the Oiler had lost 7 of 8 games against them they managed to win this one and its significance is that they managed to stop the Ducks at getting more than 4 games into their winning streak. Top of the Pacific Division, the Ducks were hoping to go into the match and dominate the Oilers on the ice but they proved to be a tougher match than they had anticipated.
The Oilers are a mediocre team and going up against them during the last few matches was like adding extra free points for the Ducks but the Oilers stood their ground and showed them otherwise. The Oilers were out of the race for playoffs and this was the 8th time in a row that they had failed to make it postseason.
The Oilers are in the fight to make it for the last playoffs spot in the Western Conference. Oilers Sam Gagner was the reason that the Oilers won as he scored the tying goal plus the shootout goal.
"I thought we played well on this trip and it's nice to get rewarded there," said Gagner.
The Ducks have had their winning streak snapped in the same fashion and that being when they are in out games. Last time they had a 3 game winning spree 2 weeks ago and got defeated by the Nashville Predators.
Anaheim head coach Bruce Boudreau said that they could not afford for this to happen and although they had a very capable team they had some issues with finishing the match strong.
"We can't let this happen. We have to find a way," said Boudreau. "Sometimes, for one reason or another, we're not getting the job done early. We're a really good team with the lead, but we just haven't had the lead lately."
