The wild fanatics of football have kept the entertainment train on the run for as long as memory serves. However, every now and then these wild fanatics of football manage to come up with such a mind-boggling act that it defines new boundaries for madness.
Such is a story of a football fan from China who has reportedly died after staying awake for 11 nights continuously. According to reports, the football fan stayed up 11 successive nights in order to watch Euro 2012 matches.
A Chinese newspaper Sanxiang Metropolis first came up with the news of the death of the 26-year-old football fan. Sanxiang Metropolis reported that football fan, who was from Changsha in southern China, was found dead by his mother after Italy defeated Ireland by 2-0 on Monday.
Reports have confirmed that the football fan was found dead in the evening. Most of the Euro 2012 matches start at 2:45 am in China and usually end around daybreak. This means whosoever is watching the Euro 2012 in China will be getting little or no sleep at all.
The Chinese paper Sanxiang Metropolis also informed that the family of unfortunate victim was using a false name to protect the identity and honor of the family and the victim.
So far, the name Jiang Xiaoshan has been used in reference to the football fan. According to medical reports the victim, who was also a member of his university’s football team, had been in good health before the start of Euro 2012.
Euro 2012, which is being hosted by Poland and Ukraine, kicked off on June 8. Since then Jiang Xiaoshan has been on a mission to watch all the matches of Euro 2012.
“We would rest occasionally but he watched every day and would not miss a single match,” a friend of the victim told the Chinese newspaper Sanxiang Metropolis.
According to the victim’s friends, Jiang Xiaoshan was in low spirits after Italy booked their place in the quarterfinals. His friends further stated that Jiang Xiaoshan, who was rooting for England and France in the tournament, seemed quite tired.
“Maybe he felt tired after staying up night after night,” one of his friends told the newspaper.
Jiang Xiaoshan’s mother was the person who found him dead. Jiang Xiaoshan, who had been out to watch the match, returned home around 5:00 am in the morning and went to his room. His mother went to wake him up for dinner in the evening but found out that her son was dead.
Sanxiang Metropolis also interviewed a doctor from a local hospital on the hazards of staying awake and Jiang Xiaoshan’s death. Doctor Liu Zhiling told the newspaper that football fan’s death was somewhat-self-inflicted.
“Staying up through the night and not sleeping enough weakened his immune system,” said Doctor Liu Zhiling. “He drank and smoked while watching the football, triggering his condition.”
