Eric Mangini Had Brett Favre Trade Forced On Him According To Friend Teddy Atlas
Apparently Eric Mangini Never Really Wanted Favre On The Jets
As the fallout from the Brett Favre Jets era continues, we're starting to hear more and more stories about how Favre wasn't particularly liked in the locker room. And now there's this. Teddy Atlas, the former boxing trainer and current boxing announcer, who is a good friend of Eric Mangini's, recently went into detail as to how Favre's arrival in New York screwed everything up.

According to Atlas, Mangini was totally prepared to enter the season with an open quarterback competition between Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens. But the arrival of Favre changed everything:

"Mangini went into the season ready for a whole different approach, whether it was going to be Chad Pennington or Kellen Clemens (at quarterback), whoever won that battle," Atlas told The Post. "It was going to be a secure, protect the ball, intelligent approach. It was something he was comfortable with, something he believed in. The whole plan, the whole blueprint got thrown out the window when Favre came. He's the antithesis of that. He throws the ball all over the place."

Atlas also called Favre "selfish", which is a word tossed around about Favre a lot lately.

But here's the key detail that Atlas informs us of: Mangini never really wanted Favre in the first place. Instead, Atlas says that team owner Woody Johnson forced the trade on Mangini, and he had no choice but to go along with it.

Whether or not that's true is probably debatable. Even though I hate Favre, I still thought the Jets would be better with him at quarterback than Pennington or Clemens, and I know I'm not the only one who thought that. I would assume that even if Mangini wasn't thrilled to have Favre at quarterback initially, I'd have to think that when the Jets where 9-3 coming off that win against the Titans, he was probably all right with who was playing quarterback.

I think the most important thing to get out of this is that on some level, the Favre experiment was destined for failure. Mangini has always been a conservative, play-it-safe coach, which is the exact antithesis of Favre, and it was also clear from day one that many players on the Jets already considered Favre selfish for how he handled his sloppy extrication from Green Bay. While winning covered these problems up for a while, losing turned them into festering open sores that spread rapidly.

And in the end, with Favre having been bashed by Thomas Jones, Kerry Rhodes and Bruce Ciskie, and no one sticking up for him either, it's pretty clear that the only guy who has Favre's back is owner Woody Johnson. And unless Johnson's a total idiot, expect Favre's time with the Jets to be over.

Woody Johnson already stated his case on the issue when he fired Mangini, didn't he?

Brett is his guy.  He sacrificed Pennington last year for his boy Brett.  Not to mention, the locker room.

But, heck, 9 wins is better than 4.

Besides, there are a lot of #4 jersey's out there.  And attendance at Jets games was actually up.

Business is good, no?

The Brett Favre of the past few years has been a very different person from the Brett Favre that everyone fell in love with 10-15 years ago. He's a shell of his former self, in terms of ability, and he has turned into a complete prick.

40 year old dude trying to relate to 22 year olds.  It's inevitable.  But again is anyone surprised of the-old-grizzled-veteran-acting-like-a-diva scenario?  I'm not.

Uh oh, someone else who gets it....Nice to see there are more sharp people out there capable of making intelligent posts & not just the 'I hate Brett Favre cuz he's on Sports Center alot...'posts.

There are yet to be discovered tribes in Borneo that can tell you that they are not shocked to hear that not only was Favre a distraction in the locker room, but his coaches were not too thrilled either. He was a square peg put into a round hole. This was Jets front office mess. They felt they were being overshadowed by the Giants and Pats. So in the hopes of getting some spotlight shone on them along with trying to sell future season tickets, they gambled on a QB with a big name and little left in the tank. For a while it looked like it was going to possibly work out, but the Jets petered out. I think Mangini biggest fault was not taking the ball out of his hands and lean on the running game down the stretch.

No matter what happened, this sounds like Mangini covering his rear. He'd be better off dropping the issue and preparing for next season.

i agree with you on that, when they was winning everything was gravy, but when you lose games, blame it on someone else and not the game calling or other players  plays.

If you enjoy watching Brett Favre play football, then you watch him for the good and the bad.  I'm glad Brett played this season after calling out the Packers GM for his attitude.

I'm glad too... that he played like crap after behaving like a 4-year old during the entire offseason.

As I was trying to express in my first post, he played good and bad, not just bad as you seem to be suggesting.

Right... he played kinda well, while leading the league in interceptions.

Will this thread ever die?  Normally I could care less, he's a grown man he can retire & unretire as many times as he wants as far as I'm concerned but just so this 'debate' can end I hope he retires very soon.
