Eric Wedge and Bob Melvin Take Home Manager of the Year Awards

It's Manager of the Year Day during MLB Awards week. Eric Wedge was appropriately named the AL winner by a large margin over Mike Scioscia and Joe Torre.

Bob Melvin is very deserving of the NL Award by leading the Diamondbacks to an NL best 90 wins, but I can't believe the honor wasn't given to Clint Hurdle who accomplished the unimaginable during the final month of the season. What's even worse it that Charlie Manuel finished second, ahead of Hurdle.

Tomorrow the NL Cy Young will be awarded to Jake Peavy, Monday the AL MVP to Alex Rodriguez. Tuesday brings more intrigue with what should be a very close NL MVP vote between several deserving candidates.

0	Bob Melvin definitely deserved this award. He took a bunch of prospects and finished witht he best record in the NL. Thats pretty amazing.

0	Melvin and Manuel rightly SHOULD be ahead of Hurdle. For the bulk of the season the Rox were simply a mediocre team at best. Who got hot at the end. This is not the managers doing. Melvin had the Snakes on top or near the top from the beginning. I am forced to conclude that he was the only obvious choice here.

0	I have no idea how this happened. Last summer I was saying he should be fired. Last season he couldn't manage the bullpen if his life depended on it. This year, he managed it perfectly. Not sure if the guys out there just improved, making him look good or what, but he did a great job.

And I'm going to assume you are so high on Melvin and Manuel because they didn't manage a team to a terrible 2nd place (and ended up being World Series bound) team; does it?

That would not be a good assumption to make at all. Managers who's teams finish in 2nd place are not automatically disquaified in my book. It all has to do with circumstances.

Maybe it was luck, maybe it was because he started to learn, but for whatever reason Melvin pushed the right buttons with the Snakes.

If I were voting, I'd have voted Melvin, then Manuel, then Hurdle. (even before first place Piniella)
