The MLB announced the winners of the American League and National League Rookie of the Year awards today. Tampa Bay Rays 3B Evan Longoria won the honor in the AL, and Chicago Cubs catcher Geovany Soto took home the hardware in the NL.
Both players were All Stars this year, and were overwhelming favorites coming into the voting. Longoria missed 30 games due ot injury, and still managed to 27 HR and 85 RBI, both league-leading totals among rookies. Soto was the backbone of the Chicago Cubs, as he not only had an excellent year at the plate, but also exhibited stellar defense and worked very well with the Cubs pitchers.
Longoria won unanimously, and Soto was only one vote short. The lone dissenter in the NL had Soto 2nd to Joey Votto of the Reds, who had a slightly better year at the plate.
