Even President Barack Obama is a fan of Dontari Poe
It took me to see Dontari Poe on the bench press to acknowledge that he was the strongest player on the Memphis team, but I was further surprised when I noticed his agility. Now, I have to admit, Poe is shockingly nimble for a man that weighs 346 pounds!
It turns out that I am not the only one who is surprised by Poe’s natural athletic abilities. The word of Poe’s star-struck performances has reached the Oval Office. Yes, that is correct – The President of the United States, Barack Obama is impressed by Dontari Poe!
Just recently, Obama was a guest on Bill Simmons’ B.S. Report podcast and there he commented on Poe’s freakishly athletic abilities. Although, Obama failed to recall Poe’s name, he remembered Poe’s shocking combination of size and speed. Obama extolled the young player, making reference to his performance during the 40-yard dash and the vertical jump.
“They just had the Combine and they were talking about some guy who’s like 340 and runs a 4.8 and has a three-foot vertical,” Obama said. “I don’t know what you do if a guy like that hits you.”
Obama was caught reminiscing about Poe when he was questioned about concussion in football and how the game can be made safer. Obama answered that he had no idea how to tackle the issue while bigger, faster and stronger players kept getting involved in increasingly violent tackles.
Obama further stated that NFL was making attempts to make football safer but they were having a hard time competing against the way in which players are advancing.
“Part of the problem is just the speed and the size of these guys now,” Obama said. “You watch the old tapes from the 50s and 60s? I mean they look like they’re going in slow motion.”
Well, I agree to that. I’ve watched Poe run the 40-yard dash and it looks like his 346-pound is running in fast forward.
