Ex-Real Madrid manager Manuel Pellegrini in the mix for Chelsea job
Malaga manager Manuel Pellegrini has become the new frontrunner for the hotseat at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea’s interim manager Rafael Benitez confirming he will not be continuing at his position at the end of the season.
Rafael Benitez just recently acknowledged that his days with the London club were numbered. The Spaniard stated that he didn’t see himself reigning over Stamford Bridge past this season because of irresolvable problems.
The former Liverpool and Inter Milan manager launched a stinging attack against the Chelsea board and fans for being unable to provide him with the support he needed to stabilize the club. Rafael Benitez expressed his discontent following Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough in the FA Cup on Wednesday.
Avram Grant, who took care of Chelsea when Jose Mourinho left the club six years ago, is expected to takeover if Rafael Benitez is sacked in the upcoming days. However, Avram Grant is not expected to stay at Chelsea beyond this season.
A long list of suitors has been linked to the Chelsea, although the saga still remains a mystery. Former Real Madrid manager Manuel Pellegrini is expected to become the new boss of Blues, or at least that’s what the Chilean’s agent is suggesting.
Manuel Pellegrini’s agent Jesus Martinez has confirmed that officials from Chelsea have informally contacted regarding the managerial post in recent days.
“Chelsea and other clubs have asked, but only through intermediaries, nothing official,” Jesus Martinez told Chilean newspaper El Mercurio. “Manuel would love to coach in the English Premier League, as he would in Germany, Italy and other important leagues.
“Manuel has a contract with Malaga. I think that, in April and May, we will be clear about what will happen with his future.
“Our first intention is to respect our commitment to Malaga, but it also depends on what the conditions are. We had a formal offer from Roma, but we rejected it. It was less than 15 days ago, but we discarded it outright because we are in the middle of the season.”
Just a couple of days ago, Manuel Pellegrini stated “does not care about the Chelsea rumors”. The former Villarreal manager said that presently he was concentrating on the success of Malaga and wouldn’t get distracted from side-talk.
