Expert Brackets: What Not to Pick

3/14/07 in NCAABB   |   CriticalFanatic   |   respect

There's no doubt you're far better off entering brackets without looking or listening to expert's. You'll drive yourself mad. Ideally that was my gameplan, but that become a challenge when entering all of their picks into the FanIQ vs Experts Bracket Challenge.

However, looking at the expert picks does provide free entertainment. Some were very predictable ... others might not have been sure this was the Men's bracket. Unfortunately the World Wide Leader in sports is becoming the world wide leader in hiding their expert brackets but I do have Bill Simmons and Vitale. (speaking of predictable)

Here's a rundown of the experts final four and bold predictions (aka - what not to pick. Champion in all caps).  Check them all out on the Bracket Challenge Leaderboard.

Gregg Doyel (Sportsline)
Final Four - FLORIDA, Kansas, North Carolina, Memphis
What? - Speaking of hate mail. Doyel pretty much mailed in his picks with the choice of Memphis as the runner-up. Not.Going.To.Happen. One of the many experts picking VCU over Duke, and also has Winthrop into the Sweet 16.

Bill Simmons
(ESPN)
Final Four - Florida, KANSAS, Georgetown, Texas A&M
Big Ten vs Durant? I'm unsure whether the Sports Guy bashed the big ten or stroked Durant more during this week. No surprise the he also has Holy Cross moving on. Can't blame him, you have to stick with your alma mater when they're only it once every so often (yep, I picked Miami). Picked Long Beach St into the Sweet 16 because of the snoop dog effect.

Dennis Dodd
(Sportsline)
Final Four - Florida, Ucla, GEORGETOWN, Virginia
What? You read that right ... UVA in the final four. This isn't lacrosse Dodd, college basketball here.

Dan Shanoff
Final Four - FLORIDA, Ucla, Georgetown, Texas A&M
"IT" Team - no doubt who that is this year, and Shanoff went one step further with Georgia Tech. Elite 8. At least he's acknowledged their inconsistency and prepared for the worst. Outside of GT, I actually have a similar bracket -- Albany over Virginia and Creighton over Memphis. Hope you're right Dan!

Dick Vitale (Duke Network)
Final Four
- Florida, Ucla, NORTH CAROLINA, Ohio State
Guess how far he has the Dukies? - Ok, it's not that bad. Majerus was worse. Just beating Pitt and into the Final Four.  Pretty much all chalk for Vitale which shouldn't be much of a surprise.

Michael Wilbon (ESPN/Wash Post)
Final Four - Florida, So Ill, GEORGETOWN, Texas A&M
Credit Wilbon for taking more upsets than any other expert. With that said, I think I know he covers the NBA. He has So Ill in the final four, UNLV and VCU into the Elite Eight.

Seth Davis (SI)
Final Four - Florida, KANSAS, Georgetown,  Texas A&M
What? - ND into the Elite Eight (which I also have), Nevada over Memphis and was one of the few who went with Oral Roberts.

Also, just thought I'd point out every expert and their mother have picked Wisconsin to lose in the second round. Go ahead and count on the Badgers moving on. VCU is also the popular choice.

So there it is ... use these picks at your discretion. I think we might have to order more of these t-shirts.

Is there any way for the rest of us to add more expert brackets?  If not, I'll link it here -- Dan Shanoff, formerly of ESPN.com, has posted his picks on the Wall Street Journal website at http://online.wsj.com/article/SB117372143200234349.html?mod=sports_primary_hs  (under "Stage 2" in the article)

Also, Rick Majerus of ESPN.com has posted his picks at the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, at http://www2.jsonline.com/multimedia/graphic.asp?graphic=http://graphics.jsonline.com/graphics/multimedia/media/mar07/majerus.jpg

Crap... I have Wisconsin losing in the 2nd round as well. This makes me want to change that pick!

Wilbon has So Ill in the Final Four? Damnit... I was hoping nobody would pick that.

Oh, I saw the picks article, but I didn't think it was actually overly harsh of the Big Ten (besides the women's basketball comment; he did say that MSU would have been one of his sleepers) or overly full of praise for Durant.  Compared to the article I linked to, his picks article was a puff piece on the B10.

Simmons does have a burgeoning man-crush on Drew Neitzel I think. Let's hope that's not a curse.

If Virginia makes the Elite 8, not even Final Four ... I'll dedicate a post a week to Dennis Dodd and Virginia Basketball.

That's the worst pick I've seen yet (beside whoever it was in our bracket challenge that picked MSU to win.)

Your right ... Monday's basketball blog was the bulk of it. I assume more is to come.

Since you mentioned the Simmons article, and I never saw it linked onto FanIQ, I'll assume you mean this article, which definitely is harsh on the Big Ten and very complimentary of Durant (but who isn't?).  With that said, I'm not a big Simmons fan, but there was an awful lot of truth to it.

Here's his picks post ... thanks to his format it only took me a good hour to enter his. Hey may prove to be correct about the Big Ten and everything he's ever said about Durant is true.

It's a close race right now between who's getting more ink. Durant probably has the lead at this point, he'll need to pull Texas past NC to hold off the Big Ten hatred.
