Fabregas not stunned by Barcelona’s defeat to AC Milan
Cesc Fabregas believes Barcelona can come from behind to stun AC Milan at Camp Nou on March 6. The Spanish midfielder confessed his side were below par in the 2-0 defeat to AC Milan at San Siro on Wednesday.
Barcelona had the lion’s share of ball possession, yet the ultra-attacking side was unable to come up with goal-scoring chances. Meanwhile, the Rossoneri played like they had the Catalans in their pocket.
AC Milan came up with the majority of goal-scoring chances with Kevin Prince Boateng opening the scoring sheet with a superb strike in the 57th minute. Sulley Muntari doubled AC Milan’s lead in the 81st minute to ensure his side went to Camp Nou with a clean sheet and a huge advantage.
Meanwhile, Barcelona were left to ponder why their creativeness was choked and where exactly were their top-performers. Fabregas admitted he wasn’t surprised by the results of the match. In an interview to Sky Sports, the former Arsenal skipper asked his team to remain positive.
“It is not a shock, we know it can happen,” Fabregas said. “But when you look at what this team has done for the past five years then the only thing in your mind is positive. We know we can do it.
“So, we do not need to be down from this.”
Fabregas explained that Barcelona needed to be more physical and travel forward with a more united approach. Barcelona’s attack was split into groups against AC Milan. Tactically, the Rossoneri outplayed the La Liga leaders.
“We were not at our best at all. I think we paid a bit physically,” Fabregas continued. “We had a few players who were playing at their limit. We knew that but, still, we should have done better. I think it will be a very exciting second leg.”
Barcelona will host the second-leg of the Round of 16 match fresh from a plethora of difficult games. Barcelona are set to encounter Sevilla this weekend, which will be followed by a Copa del Rey and La Liga game against Barcelona. After this grueling schedule, Barcelona will host AC Milan at Camp Nou.
