Over the next three weeks leading up to the NBA Draft on June 28th, we'll be conducting our own mock draft with you the fans in charge of your respective teams. Big Clips fan, Blippers brings his big time knowledge in making the 14th pick ...Considering: Rodney Stuckey, Javaris Crittenton, Nick Young, Thaddeus Young, Tiago Splitter, upgrading from the Sam Cassell '07 Operating System to the '95 version.
One of the feel-good stories of the 05-06 season had a more familiar ending this year. The Clippers were on the brink of the playoffs, but instead wound up with the last pick in the lottery. They're now in the difficult spot of not really being in a "rebuilding" stage, but clearly not being an elite team (especially in the West).
The Clippers most obvious need is at the PG spot. Cassell, who will turn 38 early next season, played only 58 games last year and Shaun Livingston (dislocated knee) is a question mark. Conley and Law are already off the board, and Stuckey and Crittenton seem more like projects/question marks. Keeping in mind that LA isn't bad enough to be rebuilding or good enough to pass on immediate help, I'll let Stuckey and Crittenton fall to someone else. Resigning Jason Hart (9 ppg, 4 apg, 1.8 spg and only 1.5 to's/g as a Clipper last year) and drafting Marist's Jared Jordan in the second round may be the best way to address their PG needs. (Jordan led the nation in assists last year and impressed at the pre-draft camp in Orlando).
While Chris Kaman's drop-off raises the question of drafting a big, I'm not sure if Splitter, Jason Smith, or Josh McRoberts are worth this pick for where the Clippers are right now. Of those remaining on the board, Thaddeus Young may be one of the players with the most upside. However, he too seems to be something of a project.
The Pick: Nick Young, SG, USC
I get the sense that Young's stock is rising. His vert of 40.5 is just half an inch shy of Thornton's, I believe, and his wingspan is reportedly 6'11.5". He's also proven his ability to score in what may have been the nation's best conference last year. With his ballhandling and shooting touch, I believe he could average double-digit scoring as a rookie (given enough minutes). The Clips could use a wing player with some pop off the bench, and they don't have to look beyond SoCal.
