FanIQ College Football Top 25: No. 18 Texas Tech Red Raiders Preview & Predictions
Red Raiders Can Gun, But Can They Stop The Run?

Practice has begun, college football is less than a month away and we're ready. Over the next four week we'll be counting down with fan previews of the Top 25 teams as voted on by you.

Suggested Team Slogan: We Can Gun, But Can We Stop The Run?

What was learned in 2007: Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree can't be stopped, barely even contained. Harrell threw for 5,705 yards, 1,962 of which went through Crabtree's hands. Juggernaut-type numbers that will be duplicated again this fall, if not improved upon. Regardless of the year, Mike Leach's offense is going to put up massive numbers that will keep the Red Raiders in every game.

It all comes down to defense.

Expectations in 2008: The coaches tabbed Texas Tech No. 14 in their preseason poll, a ranking that I believe is too high. The Red Raiders were 4-4 in the Big 12 last year, and having to visit Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas A&M and Kansas State, I don't see them winning more than one of those games. But that's just my take, those in Lubbock see the high preseason ranking and want Big 12 Title. Disappointment lurks...

What could hold them back: Defense, defense, defense. Same story, different year. I wonder if Mike Leach even acknowledges that side of the ball in practice? In the Red Raiders four losses, they gave up roughly 45 points per game. I don't envision a porous unit turning into a Big 12 Champ caliber defense overnight. Leach added a junior college defensive end they are thrilled about in Brandon Sesay, who should add a pass rushing threat. He'll need to be an All-Big 12 type immediate impact if the Red Raiders have any chance. It helps that the defensive backfield is above average. As is always the case in football, good teams are seperated by great teams by just a couple plays that bounce the right way. Texas Tech will give up yards and points, but if they can balance that with enough big turnovers then who knows. Maybe this will be the best team in Lubbock since 1976.

Big Men on Campus: It's obvious. The Raiders are all about Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree. They are a must watch pass and catch combo. I wasn't buying all the hype on Crabtree for most of last year, assuming the yards were all easy wide open catches against weak opponents. Then I saw Crabtree carry the team on his back against Texas. The Red Raiders lost, but not even the Longhorns All-American talent on defense could stop him. He'll fight the "system" label when it comes to Heisman talk, but he could be worthy of a visit to New York this winter.

Cheerleader Grade:

Yes, No, NO. A couple All-Americans in Lubbock, but absolutely no depth. None. Nadda. D+

NCAA Football '09 Simulation: 10-3 (5-3) with losses to Oklahoma, Texas, and Nebraska. A
27-13 victory over Washington St in the Emerald Bowl.

1st team All-American: Wr Michael Crabtree
2nd team All-American: Qb Graham Harrell, Wr Eric Morris
1st team All-Big 12: Wr Michael Crabtree
2nd team All-Big 12: Qb Graham Harrell, Wr Eric Morris, Rolb Marlon
Williams

Wr Michael Crabtree: 133 catches for 1857 yards and 14 Td's.
Beletnikoff winner.
Qb Graham Harrell: 429-599 for 5470 yards, 55 td's and 11 int's.
Heisman, Maxwell, and Davey O'Brien award winner.
Wr Eric Morris: 86 catches for 1234 yards and 15 td's
Rolb Marlon Williams: 71 tackles 10 TFL 1 sack and 5 int's.

Schedule and Predictions

Aug. 30 Eastern Washington W
Sept. 6 at Nevada W
Sept. 13 SMU W
Sept. 20 Massachusetts W
Oct. 4 at Kansas State L
Oct. 11 Nebraska W
Oct. 18 at Texas A&M L
Oct. 25 at Kansas L
Nov. 1 Texas L
Nov. 8 Oklahoma State W
Nov. 22 at Oklahoma L
Nov. 29 Baylor W

That's quite the schedule, Leach. Eastern Washington AND Massachusetts? I realize UMass is a very good D1-AA team, but scheduling two lower division opponents is about as weak as it gets. Texas Tech is a better team than Kansas State, but the light schedule and overconfidence will bite them in Manhattan. If they're going to pull a big upset, I can see it happening in Lawrence but I've got too much confidence in the grind it out capabilities of the Jayhawks. 7-5 and a likely bowl win.

Thanks for not buying into the hype about this Red Raider defense. This unit just had too far to come from last year and not enough fresh blood to make such a dramatic improvement plausible. I might have to credit them with wins against KState and the Aggies, however. I feel like both of these teams are in down years. KState will need to find offensive production at tailback and a replacement for Jordy Nelson who really felt like their everything last season. Even assuming a very successful off season on their part there's no way they can outscore Mike Leach's juggernaught. A&M has the tools to beat Tech, especially with their two phenomenal tailbacks, giving me the impression that neither team will really be able to defend the other. The heisman candidate Crabtree should put points on the board at a slightly higher rate and with more consistency to bring Tech the W in this game. I still see you as way more accurate than most Red Raider predictions because of the Texas and Kansas games. Both of these teams can slow the Tech passing attack and have enough offensive firepower to expose the Red Raider defense. Nice preview

Not enough fresh blood on defense? You forgot that we just landed a JC transfer standing  6' 7" 265lb DE that originally signed with Georgia by the name of Brandon Sesay, and another JC transfer named McKinner Dixon (was a freshman All American for Tech, but flunked out, and now back).

Also, the Tech defense was the #1 defense in the Big 12 last year after firing their Def Cordinator mid-season.

Get your facts straight.

6' 7" 265lb DE... Sesay... remember that.

You almost made it worse....and then some of the pics of the Texas Tech dance team helped...some.
Anyhoo, I believe the review was pretty spot on, I think they can eke out one more win either A&M or KU....Would be nice if the AD would schedule real non-conference opponents.

i would call two players not enough actually...
and even assuming two players could make enough difference to save a train wreck defense like tech back, congratulations, you are using the same strategy to fill holes as powerhouses like kansas state. i'm sure your new jc defensive ends will run over experienced division 1 offensive lines.
finally, like most people associated with lubbock, you've failed at reading. I never said TTU's defense would not improve. I said they did not improve enough. substituting a couple of average players for the epic failures you had last season does not bring you to the forefront of a conference.

oh yeah and i got my facts straight for you:
Texas put up 8 touchdowns and 550 yards of total offense against this team DURING Ruffin McNeil's tenure. Remember that?

r u freakin kidding me? i liked so much that i had to print out a copy and line the birgcages with it. seriously, what kind of drivel are you writing? the problem is that you are writing out of the mid-west and not from any reputable news sites etc.,etc. everyone is entitled to their own, but man, please have some 1st hand knowledge of what the hell your writing about. thats like saying someone that writes from edmund, ok writing about a team from the weak 11 conference (big 10 if you cant catch up) and writing how illinois will only be good because of how week the conference is not because their starting QB cant hit the broadside of the barn with his passes. point of this is you should have gotten on a plane to lubbock and seen things for yourself. and maybe interview a couple of people before you wrote this trash. besides the only people who dont believe whats happening here is probably from either kansas or missouri. as for our schedule......read about how we were screwed by tulsa and besides....with a tough conference schedule, why would you want to have a tough non-conference sched????? see KU'07!!!!!!!!

what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul

Looks like this review has come out of California, by someone who will have a difficult time finding where the Big xii schools are located on the map of the US. For someone to comment on the performance of a team with whom there is little familiarity is assinine. Also, the writer of the article needs to learn a bit of math: "having to visit Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas A&M and Kansas State, I don't see them winning more than one of those games", will if this was the authors original thoughts then how come the predicted results for the season was projected to be 10-3, these numbers dont add up. May be we will get (but don't expect after this) a better review of the Pac10 schools. The weak Pac-10 will be  a lot easier to analyze than the strong big XII

Go ahead and re-read the capsule. It refers to the Simulation on the video game NCAA '09 as a 10-3 record (obviously incl a bowl game). If you and those other Big xii fans are such superior  journalists, you should write an article about Texas Tech that we can all learn from.
Can't wait for that big, strong, powerhouse Big 12 school Kansas to come here and teach these little Big East Bulls a lesson in football...........yeah, can't wait.

Well, you're right, Tulsa would have made that a MUCH tougher non-con schedule............................

There's more, if you did ANY research on Tech's fall practices you would have seen that the Tech defense is playing on fire. Ruffin has got the defense exploding on the ball, confident, and actually STOPPING the #1 offense in the country in scrimmages.

The D-line has incredible depth, probably the most depth in the Big 12, and the receiver turned CB L.A. Reed  is a monster, and has caused utter havoc for Harrel and the first team offense.

This team means business -- and for those of you who don't believe it -- you will.

The defense sees that offense EVERYDAY. They know what they think. They are also team mates. Don't try to use practice as a guide of how your favorite team is going to perform against teams that are getting ready to beat you. In practice they are working on simple execution of the play not to beat the defense or vice versa. You'll learn over time that practice doesn't mean much when ranking and determining how good a team is. In college football its the record of that team  at the end of the season. Practice doesn't factor.

Someone needs to do some big 12 defensive line research. I'd start with phil steele's all conference teams if i were you...
