Suggested Team Slogan Will the Real Colt McCoy Please Stand Up?
What we learned in 2007 Remember when quarterback Colt McCoy was nearly a Heisman Trophy contender during his freshman season that included 26 touchdowns and just 4 interceptions? Last year didn't work out as well, throwing 18 interceptions. The real McCoy is somewhere in the middle, probably closer to 2006 consistency, but we learned he's not exactly going to win four Heisman's.
Related directly to McCoy, we learned how valuable Limas Sweed has been to the offense who was a threat to go deep on every pass. His absence is going to be missed this season.
We also learned that Kansas State's Ron Prince currently owns the Longhorns. In each of the last two seasons, the Wildcats blitzed UT, and sent what was a BCS campaign down to the Holiday & Alamo Bowls. The good news is that Ron Prince and his team won't be on the opposite side of the field this year unless it's in the conference championship game.
Expectations in '08 It's Texas, so nothing changes. Big XII Championship and BCS berth or bust. That may be a little too much this year.
In his third year at QB, Colt McCoy is no doubt one of the nation's better signal caller and not just a threat with his arm. He'll provide the experience needed, to compensate for an average receiving core (for UT) and a new running back. 18 interceptions and 7 fumbles is way, way too much for any team to overcome. He must get that number under 12 at the very least if Texas wants a Big XII South title.
Henry Orakpo should impose a great deal of fear on opposing quarterbacks at defensive end. Outside of the All-American candidate, this isn't as strong a Texas defense as you're accustomed to. Disappointed to learn that behemoth fullback Henry Melton has moved over the defensive end.
What could hold them back Facing top quarterbacks Chase Daniel, Graham Harrell, Todd Reesing and Sam Bradford with an average defensive secondary. Not to mention, a difficult task in week one against Florida Atlantic's Rusty Smith.
Texas allowed over 30 points six times last season and it's safe to assume that will happen again even with new defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. His scheme is aggressive and it's proven to work, but that passing talent in the Big XII still holds the advantage.
McCoy's offense will need to be explosive, but lacks that proven explosiveness with Jamaal Charles and Limas Sweed departed. Freshman Foswhitt Whittaker could be that guy.
Big Men on Campus Do I really need to elaborate. It's Colt's campus and the rest of Austin is just paying tuition. (Back up John Chiles could become a fan favorite with his legs for a change of pace)

9-3 (5-3 Big XII) - Don't laugh, I really think Florida Atlantic will make Saturday's game come down to the final quarter. Like Central Florida a year ago, THIS is their game. Rusty Smith and Florida Atlantic come off a bowl game win and have a fair amount of talent that the bigger Florida schools left behind. They'll win, but won't survive in Boulder. Back to Alamo Bowl go the Longhorns.
