Our Heisman man FXDirect is on something called a vacation this week, so you're subject to my college football blather again. And don't worry, I don't have Javon Ringer No. 1... yet. Mark Sanchez auditioned on a national stage last Saturday and didn't disappoint. Despite what you may think of the Ohio State Buckeyes, that remains one of the best defenses in the country, and the Trojan man threw for 172 yards and four touchdowns. Some of those spectacular passes, and if the Buckeyes had kept the game close, he could have kept in attack mode and dropped a few more. The trouble for me in keep Sanchez and No. 1 on my list is that he benefits as much as anyone from the talent around him. Whereas Tim Tebow did nearly all of the work himself last year, Sanchez has triple the amount of options. With the said, Sanchez remains the man. Hopefully USC plays in enough close games where he can drop some big time numbers.
I also remain incredibly impressed with Chase Daniel and Jeremy Maclin. The Tigers QB took apart a less than steller Nevada defense to the tune of 405 yards and 4 touchdowns in an essentially perfect outing. Usually wide receivers aren't considered for the Heisman, but Maclin is such a return threat that he begs a spot in my top 5 in addition to his four receiving TD's already.
Here's my Top 5 for the Heisman Trophy after three weeks (totals on the year):
1. Mark Sanchez - 43 for 65, 510 yards, 7 TD / 2 INT Next: @ Oregon State, Thurs. Sept 25th.
2. Chase Daniel - 65 for 90, 973 yards, 10 TD / 1 INT (58 rushing yards) Next: vs Buffalo, Saturday.
3. Tim Tebow - 30 for 49, 393 yards, 3 TD / 0 INT (92 rushing yards) Tebow gets his national stage in Knoxville against the Vols. Hopefully the addition of Percy Harvin can create a big outing for the two.
4. Jeremy Maclin - 12 rec, 223 yards, 4 TD; 113 punt return yards, 184 kick return yards, 1 TD Next: vs Buffalo, Saturday.
5. Sam Bradford - 64 of 81, 882 yards, 12 TD / 2 INT (1 TD rushing) Yeah, he's been OK. Hitting 79 percent of his attempts, we'll have to hold off until October 11th before we full decide Bradford's merits.
The next group: Max Hall (BYU), Knowshon Moreno (UGA), Rey Maualuga (USC), Matt Grothe (USF) and Javon Ringer (MSU).
Unknown to start watching: Donald Brown of UConn is currently second in the nation with 566 yards and 8 touchdowns. He's on ESPN2 Friday night vs Baylor. Give him a look, man can find the openings.
How do you see the Heisman stacking up in the early going?
