Chase Daniel had his shot to join the final discussion and while the performance likely drops him out of first place consideration, he's had a tremendous season and deserves an invitation to New York. It's come down to Tim Tebow and Darren McFadden. The Heisman Pundit has all but crowned the Florida quarterback, but I suspect it's not a done deal. If previous results have shown voting trends it's that an upperclassmen has a built in advantage and McFadden's final performance against LSU still lingers.
A clarification for those of you who think like June Jones, which for your sake I hope is only a small minority. The Heisman award is for the best college player. This has nothing to do with how any player's game translates to the next level. Jones tried to justify Brennan's Heisman candidacy by point out how Alex Smith hasn't been successful in the pro's after playing in Urban Meyer's system. Brennan had a fine career throwing a lot of passes against lousy competition. We should probably create some new sort of award for that. We'll call is "The Ware-Klinger Trophy."
OK, back to the actual candidates. Here's the final statistics that only tell a portion of the story.
Tim Tebow
Florida Gators: 9-3 Record
3,312 passing yards (68.5 completion pct)
*29 TD / 6 INT
2nd in NCAA in passer rating (177.85)
838 yards rushing
*22 TD
*first player in D1 history to be in the 20/20 club
Best Game: @ South Carolina -- 304 pass yds, 2 TD, 120 rush yds, 5 TD
Darren McFadden
Arkansas Razorbacks: 8-4 Record
1,725 rushing yards (4th in D1)
15 TD
164 receiving yards, 1 TD
123 passing yards, 4 TD
Best Game: @ LSU -- 206 rush yds, 3 TD
Pat White, Dennis Dixon, and Chase Daniel all deserve to be acknowledge with a trip to New York (we can invite Brennan, too, to receive his award above). White and Dixon are likely the victim of getting injured but they wouldn't be the first players who've fallen into this unfortunate category.
Since I don't have any preconceived negative feelings about Florida, my vote has gone to Tim Tebow. I'm glad I'm able to appreciate what was an awesome season ranking among the best ever from the quarterback position.
Submit your final ballot and we'll announce the FanIQ Heisman on Saturday before the experts do their thing. Tebow looks to be on his way after the early returns.
