FanIQ Heisman Watch Week 5: How Many Losses Can Darren McFadden Have?
by CriticalFanatic

One-third the way through the season it's time to actually pay attention to the Heisman race. This isn't what I think will happen, but my take on the trophy after 4 weeks.

A few links to others opinions: ESPN Heisman Watch, Heisman Pundit

1. Darren McFadden, Arkansas - 86 car, 519 yards rushing, 4 TD (1 TD pass)
I don't think there's any doubt the McFadden is the best offensive player in college football. That's essentially how the award is defined. With two losses I don't see any reason to downgrade him yet, but he's going to need to have even more spectacular numbers against the likes of LSU and Alabama if the Razorbacks are to add another loss or two. McFadden's 173 ypg is 1st in the country.

2. Andre' Woodson, Kentucky - 86 for 134, 1008 yards passing, 11 TD/0 INT
I try not to pay too much attention to stats, and even though Woodson's are still impressive, it's his performance in the last two games that stands out. Even if it was Louisville, Kentucky needed a scoring drive in the final minutes and he delivered. With the schedule the Wildcats face, Woodson will have every opportunity to gain a trip to New York.

3. Tim Tebow, Florida
- 65 for 95, 1096 yards passing, 10 TD/1 INT; 385 yards rushing, 7 TD
If you just remove the fact he's only a sophomore, which should be done, it's hard to play THE TEBOW this low. He did what he needed to do against Ole Miss, which was break the school record for QB rushing yards. Tebow's candidacy is likely decided when the Gators face the best defense in the country (LSU). Either way, he's going to New York.

4. Mike Hart, Michigan - 127 car, 655 yards, 6 TD
So the Wolverines lost a few games in embarrassing fashion. Don't hold that against Mike Hart. Before facing Hart, Penn State had allowed 66 yards on the ground. Mike racked up 153 against what will finish as one of the top 5 rushing defenses in the country.

5. Dennis Dixon, Oregon
- 66 for 96, 932 yards passing, 11 TD/0 INT; 376 yards rushing, 4 TD
He wasn't on anyone's radar, except some MLB scouts, before the season started. A 4-0 start, coupled with big performances on the ground and the air, it's easy to see he's one of the top players in the country. Vince Young 2.0. California will be the best defense he's faced thus far, which presents a great chance on ABC (with GameDay in attendance ... which does, in fact, play a role) to win a trip to NYC.

6. Pat White, West Virginia
7. Steve Slaton, West Virginia
8. Matt Ryan, Boston College
9. Ray Rice, Rutgers
10. Sam Bradford, Oklahoma

*Yes, No Colt Brennan. Keep slinging it, buddy. I'll throw him up here after facing a BCS team.

No Rules Heisman StandingsGuys who have no chance based on position/school are equally talented and equally productive.

1. Glenn Dorsey, LSU -  The best football player on the field in every game this season.
2. Sedrick Ellis, USC - OT has yet to contain him.
3. Dan Connor, Penn State - If the Heisman was a statue of a middle linebacker it'd look an awful lot like him.
4. Jonal Saint-Dic, Michigan State - 6 sacks, 5 forced fumbles (1st in nation), and 8 tackles for loss. Single-handedly closed out the Spartans last three games with key sacks.
5. George Selvie, South Florida - 14 tackles for a loss has been a big factor in the Bulls 4-0 start.

Your thoughts.

I still think Chase Daniel at Mizzou is a better QB than Tebow, but... obviously everyone else doesn't... so, I'm a minority!

I do like Chase ... he'll have his chances over the next two weeks to jump into this mess.

I agree with Darren McFadden as the first choice.  I don't think wins matter as much for running backs as they do for quaterbacks.  As long as his individual numbers are strong, I think he'll stay at the top.  Andre Woodson could make a strong case for himself by showing up big time against LSU or Florida, even if they don't win.  As a Gator, I'd love to see Tebow get it but being a sophomore, I don't think he will (much like McFadden not get a whole lot of attention last year).

Another statement from E! Graham Harrel at TTU... 19 TDs / 2 Interceptions, 73% completion... Projected to have 5800+ yards... which, we know he won't get once he has some Big XII action... but, still... those numbers pretty dang impressive.

And he had 600+ yards in a loss to OK State.
Against OK State, Graham Harrell had 5 TDs, but he could have had 6.  Selvie has 8.5 sacks, too.

How dare I have an opinion different than yours.

Heisman is to find the best player in College Football. He's not close. If the Heisman is to find the quarterback who can throw for the most yards, then let's crown his ass. He's a good qb. That's it. Oh, and he has a strong arm to be able to throw that many times.

Where do you suggest Graham Harrell in the Heisman?

I think that if he was as consistently amazing as Brennan, I'd be impressed. But last year, he had far less TD's, and about the same amount of INT's. Let's wait and see how he does against a better opponent, like Brennan did last year, when he threw for 5 TD's and only 1 INT against BCS bowl winner Boise State, and 5 TD's in his bowl game.
