FanIQ Interactive Mock NFL Draft: Houston Texans

With The Fifteenth Pick In the FanIQ Mock Draft, The Houston Texans Select...

With the NFL Draft coming on April 25, we're putting together a Mock Draft for the first round of the draft, featuring a combination of FanIQ Featured Writers, as well as some great NFL team bloggers from around the internet. Today, we'll feature picks from the Washington Redskins, New Orleans Saints and Houston Texans. Every day until Friday, April 24, we will post more picks, with recaps of why each player was chosen, with some other analysis. Next up, I'll be taking care of the the #15 pick for the Houston Texans.

Here are the picks so far:

1. Detroit Lions - Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest
2. St Louis Rams - Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia
3. Kansas City Chiefs - Jason Smith, OT, Baylor
4. Seattle Seahawks - Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia
5. Cleveland Browns - Micahel Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
6. Cincinnati Bengals - Michael Oher, OT, Mississippi
7. Oakland Raiders - BJ Raji, DT, Boston College
8. Jacksonville Jaguars - Everette Brown, LB, Florida State
9. Green Bay Packers - Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas
10. San Francisco 49ers - Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri
11. Buffalo Bills - Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State
12. Denver Broncos - Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn State
13. Washington Redskins - Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
14. New Orleans Saints - Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State

The Texans have a young, up and coming team, and are coming off their 2nd straight 8-8 season under head coach Gary Kubiak. Their skill positions look pretty solid with Matt Schaub, Steve Slaton and Andre Johnson producing well when they're all healthy, and the defense, led by former #1 overall pick Mario Williams is improving, but still has some holes. Their primary positions of need are in the secondary and at the linebacker position.

Malcolm Jenkins would be a nice pick here, if he were to last that long. In this draft, however, he went one pick too soon, to the Saints. USC linebackers Clay Matthews and Brian Cushing would also be good picks for the Texans, since they would each strengthen the linebacking corps considerably. Beanie Wells is another name that has been thrown around, but I'm not convinced that they need a RB bad enough to use this pick to get one, especially since Wells might be a bit of a reach at this point.

In the end, I think the Texans should (and will) go with USC LB Clay Matthews. He fits a need, he's extremely talented (and still improving), and his uncle Bruce works for the team. I think that will end up pushing him over the top and the Texans will take him here with the #15 pick.

Wow do I disagree with this pick.  Did everyone forget about Zac Diles?  Texans should draft a RB or an O-Lineman maybe even a cb..Dunta is unhappy

Diles was injured (broken leg) and missed the last part of the season, although they think he'll be fine this year. The Texans rotate their guys a lot, so local NFL reporters think they'll go heavy on defense at the beginning of the draft.  If Jenkins (CB) were to fall, they probably would look at taking him.  They're supposed to look for a RB in the middle rounds, and maybe an O-Lineman after that.  I'm just hoping that they finally get it going at the beginning of the season, rather than partway through it.

Not many Houston Texans fans I guess...sad because they are an up and coming team, albeit in a very tough division.

Not near enough yet, but there are a few of us out here!  For a long time now, the Texans / NFL writer for the local paper has been saying we should go after Matthews.  I hope they do!

I would love to have another Matthews/SC guy in Houston. If he will be half as good as his old man. We will have an fearsome front 7

p.s. Pat, Bruce is Clay's uncle. Clay's dad was the long time Browns LB.

Played briefly for Atlanta too.

I know... there aren't a ton of pictures out there of only him that don't look somewhat like that.

Good choice for them.  Him and Demeco Ryans would give them a very formidable LB group, and Matthews would help a lot in the blitz and rush the QB area a lot.
