FanIQ GameDay Live: Week 5
If you have trouble keeping up, don't worry, so do most of the rest of us. Without further ado...
Bills at Browns
There may be a Faustian deal somewhere in this Cleveland’s past, right? That’s the only explanation at this point. Solid win though.
That was actually a really good game. Who'da thunk? Now let's see how Weeden can take over the team from now on, though.
Patriots @ Bengals on CBS
Marcus - A.J. Green is in the same part of QB purgatory as Larry Fitzgerald. Shouldn’t he be ripping the league a new one? Andy Schaub Dalton (too soon?) may not be the answer. The Pats losing Wilfork is huge and the offense will continue to be a work in progress until Gronk’s Dad lets him get back out there. So when in doubt, go with Brady and Belichick. PATRIOTS
Jess - I don't even know what's going on anymore. I mean, obviously all Tom Brady does is win. I'll agree that losing Wilfork is huge, but I've become convinced that Belichick and/or Brady have made some sort of deal with a football deity and as long as they're in New England they'll continue to dominate at least the regular season. Plus, I'm not so sure that the Bengals haven't just lucked out a few times.
Lions @ Packers on FOX
Marcus - A must win for the Pack and a statement game for the Lions. I’m really looking forward to this one. Somebody’s season is going to change course after this one. The Packers giving 6.5 points seems a bit high, but their season is on the brink. I’m giving the points. PACKERS
Jess - Where the hell did the Lions come from last week against the Bears? I didn't watch the game. Were the Bears shooting themselves in the foot? Is Detroit just that good? What happened? Apparently Detroit always loses at Lambeau. I'm gonna say that trend continues today.
Seahawks @ Colts on FOX
Marcus - ‘The Heir Apparent Bowl’ featuring two second year QBs coming off playoff appearances. I’m also looking forward to a possible Richard Sherman vs. “The U’s” Reggie Wayne. (Please let one of them be mic’d up!) Seattle’s M.O. holds true and they go down by double digits early then pull it out down the stretch on a wacky “Pistol Pete” fake punt or something? SEAHAWKS
Jess - Oh you know they'll put Sherman on Wayne. Whether one or both will be mic'd up? Who knows - but I agree...it would be awesome. I liked the little exchange via NFL Network between Sherm and Luck too. I really hope you're wrong about the Hawks going down by double digits...I'm about tired of the panic. But you're probably not. These guys don't usually wake up and start playing until noon Pacific time; looks like moving practices to 10:00am didn't help a whole lot. But I like your pick and hope it's correct!
Ravens @ Dolphins on CBS
Marcus - The Ravens are back to their old ways of ignoring Rice and putting it all on Flacco’s shoulders with the expected results. Miami ran into the Saints Monday Night Buzz Saw last week and probably aren’t as bad as they looked at times. Injuries aren’t helping Miami either. Neither team plays the pass particularly well so this could be another early game “wild one.” Take the over and MIAMI.
Jess - Why would you ignore one of the better RB's in the game and put the game on an overpaid mediocre regular season QB? I mean...why? I didn't get it when they gave him limited carries last year either. Dude needs to go somewhere they'll use him. I'm going to give this one to Miami at home too.
Saints @ Bears on FOX
Marcus - The Bears are 23rd against the pass, but they get Brees & company on their home turf, which can be shoddy at times. Advantage: Bears. This game for the Saints reminds me of the one they played at Lambeau last year where they missed a late, game winning field goal. I think they hit it this year and win an ugly one. SAINTS
Jess - I think the Bears will bounce back and play a better game than they did last week. That said, they may be outta luck - it's the Saints. This game will probably actually be pretty telling about both teams. Should be a good game - I just wish it wasn't on at the same time my Hawks are playing. I'll probably be able to catch it on NFL Replay. Hmmm...I'll say...Saints.
Eagles @ Giants on FOX
Marcus - There’s absolutely NO defense involved in this one. It’s a RedZone Special. Expect lots of Salsa dancing, Shady McCoy breaking ankles, a David Wilson 60 yarder or two and D Jax running parallel to the goal line before scoring. All of it! The over/under is 54.5 take it and the IGGLES.
Jess - Ya know what? I know the Giants are awful this year, and I know I picked the upset against the Chiefs last week and I was wrong. I do have faith that they'll pick it up at some point though, and this is as good a week as any. I think this season is basically a wash for them, but I also don't think they'll lose every game. I agree - ridiculously high scoring game. Maybe Eli pulls himself together today and just barely pulls off the win.
Chiefs @ Titans on CBS
Marcus - This would have been a sneaky good match up until Jake Locker got hurt. (I can’t believe I just typed that?) There is no way in hell I’m picking a team with Ryan Fitzpatrick at QB and we haven’t had a ‘Jamaal Charles’ game yet this year. CHIEFS
As awesome as the Chiefs are this year, I think (just like all the other undefeated teams this year, save the Broncos) they'll suffer an upset at the hands of a relatively surprising team. Is this the week? Remember when the Bills started out pretty good last season with Fitzpatrick? WE JUST DON'T KNOW! Titans defense is pretty good too. Eenie Meenie Miney...Titans. Just because.
Jaguars @ Rams on CBS
Marcus - The Rams drafted Tavon Austin 8th overall last year and he’s touched the ball 24 times this season. By comparison, the similarly diminutive playmaker, Darren Sproles had 16 touches (incl. return duty) in the Saints win over Miami. FYI: St. Louis’s Offensive Coordinator was running the Jets O last year, which probably explains a lot. Having said that, I can’t even think of anything even mildly interesting to write about the Jags. RAMS
Jess - If I wasn't a chatty-cathy I would simply say "Woof." Gus Bradley knows the Rams well, having been DC in their division for a few years - but Fisher had them only one of those years, so maybe not. I'm just making stuff up at this point to have something to say about the Jags besides that their helmets are weird. Ya know, the fact that these two teams are awful probably means this will be one of the best games of the day. Weird, right? That's the NFL. Rams - because at least they've got a roster full of talent and a ton of potential.
Panthers @ Cardinals on FOX
Marcus - These teams have some very solid talent, especially on defense, but they also have Ron Rivera and Carson Palmer prominently involved. Flash forward ---> late 4th quarter, flip a coin. Heads, Rivera’s weird play calling and clock management. Tails, the patented Palmer pick-6. This is too close to call, so I actually just flipped a coin. CARDINALS!
Jess - I think the Panthers are a better team this year than they're getting credit for. It seems like they're not getting a whole lot of attention for some reason, and may come out of nowhere to make a playoff run. Arizona has some solid talent and a good coach (finally) and definitely have the potential to do something exciting. I don't think it's today.
Broncos @ Cowboys on CBS
Marcus - Trap game + some RomoCoaster Flash = Upset of the week. Doesn’t this feel like the kind of game that gets Cowboy Nation all fired up before they go on a 3 game losing streak? Simmer down Denver, you’re gong to go 14-2. This is just one of those two losses. COWBOYS
Jess - Ya think? I don't know; I don't see Dallas containing this Denver offensive monstrosity. You're right about this feeling like that type of game, but I don't think it's going to happen. I already think they're a bit fired up, and losing to the Broncos won't change that. I mean...it's the Broncos. It's Peyton. Who wouldn't lose to them right now?
Texans @ 49ers on NBC
Marcus - A few weeks ago these teams were getting some of the buzz as this year’s Super Bowl match up. Now they’re both 2-2 with bad beats on their resumes. How the 49ers are giving 7 points is beyond me? Houston had Seattle, the same team that beat up San Fran a few weeks ago, right where they wanted them… BUT THEY LET THEM OFF THE HOOK! I am not at all confident in Matt Schaub, but they need a bounce back win. TEXANS
Jess - For the love of everything good and decent, please be right. The 49ers are still a tough team. The Texans are still a tough team. Cushing's back, and between him and JJ, RW was running for his life last week. I think SF has a better O-Line than the Seahawks right now, but Houston's front 7 are scary. I also think Schaub is ticked off, JJ is ticked off, Foster and Tate are ticked off...I hope that translates on the field. And why did SF just pick up Skelton? Is Harbaugh planning another "shake-up" move if Kaepernick doesn't start performing? From what I can see - and I haven't seen much, mind you - most of his aerial weapons are gone and they're not letting him run as much. As much as I dislike the dude, it doesn't seem as if it's all on him. My pick here is probably wishful thinking more than anything.
Raiders-really-need-their-own-stadium WTF Midnight Game:
Chargers @ Raiders on NFL Network
Marcus - The Raiders have played some people tough and they’re sorta/kinda fun to watch with Tyrelle “Football” Pryor running around doing stuff, but the truth of the matter is they aren’t that good. Philip Rivers has the second best QB rating behind you know who. I’ll wait while that sinks in. This is maybe closer than we all think, but I’m going with the hot hand to pull this one out at 3 in the morning. CHARGERS
Jess - I'm picking the Raiders here, just because.
MNF Bonus Picks:
Jets at Falcons
Marcus - The J-E-T-S aren’t a mess anymore, but the Falcons are… in terms of injuries that is. Geno on the road scares me and so do wounded animals. The Falcons need this game or their season might be over. I know everybody on their roster is “Questionable” (insert joke here if you’re a Saints fan like me), but this is a gut check game. A FG late wins it. FALCONS
The Jets might not be a mess anymore but...well...I think they kinda are. If the Falcons can't get past this game, I'm going to start getting a little skrred for them. Though they have some important cogs injured, they're still a better team than the Jets. Right? RIGHT?!
Thank you, Marcus! Hopefully you run the board.
