Danny Ainge has nothing on the fans. Over the next three weeks leading up to the NBA Draft on June 28th, we'll be conducting our own mock draft with you the fans in charge of your respective teams. Now the draft gets interesting; I'm making the pick for the Atlanta Hawks ...Considering: Mike Conley Jr, Al Horford, New GM
Normally I'd say a team couldn't go wrong at #3. Actually, I said it about 2 weeks ago. But this is the Atlanta Hawks we're talking about. They most definitely could screw this up.
Despite the depth of talent in the draft, I'm narrowing my choices down to the two above. Anyone else I'd consider this another failed draft. They are ready to contribute immediately next season.
I should have known when I said Horford was the no-brainer choice at #3, that I'd inevitable go against myself. Al is without question the third best player in the draft. Should he end up here or Memphis, I still contend he'll win Rookie of the Year. So why am I going to pass on him when I think so highly of his future?
Atlanta NEEDS a point guard. BAD. While Conley isn't the best player available, he's 2nd or 3rd (Brewer), and will be a much better NBA PG than Acie Law. The Hawks can't wait around about hope Conley falls in the draft, or settle for Law at 11.
There's also this ... I think Conley will most closely resemble Steve Nash's career, the perfect leader of an up-tempo offense. Already a gifted passer and penetrator, he'll improve his outside shot and join Chris Paul and Brandon Roy as the PG of the future.
The Pick: Mike Conley Jr, PG, Ohio State
Up Next: GM Jon with the Memphis Grizzlies
Who would you select with the 3rd pick?
