FanIQ GameDay Live: Week 4
This week we are joined by resident sports guru and my right-hand man, Scott! If you've spent any time on FanIQ at all, anywhere on the site from trivia to polls to gamecenters, you know who Scott is. He also helps me out a LOT with the behind-the-scenes stuff, and you have him to thank for most of the picks you're able to make in the sports bars! Let's make our picks for the day...
Seahawks @ Texans on FOX
Scott - After surviving on the road in Week 1 against Carolina, the Seahawks have put up back-to-back impressive wins at home. Now, they get another stern road test against a Texans team that quite frankly is lucky to be 2-1. Both teams have balance offensively but I like the Seahawks defense a bit better than the Texans. Seahawks 23 - Texans 20
Jess - As a Hawks fan, regardless of how good my team is, I'm always going to be apprehensive. I don't think I'll ever have the confidence in my team that a lot of the "new" fans do, no matter what they're doing. We have a lot of injuries on our O-Line right now, and that's no bueno no matter how balanced the offense is. And Houston scares me! I feel like they're still that great team just itching for that breakout game to remind us all why they're SB contenders. I just hope they wait until Week 5 to do it.
Colts @ Jaguars on CBS
Scott - Through 3 weeks, the Colts have put up the most impressive win in the NFL, a butt whooping at San Francisco over the 49ers. Normally you would think this could be a trap game for Indy, but the Jaguars are really bad. Colts 28 - Jaguars 3
Jess - Aww the poor Jags this year. Do you think they'll win even one game? I know JX and Indy usually give each other their best, but I just don't think the Jags best is enough to beat much of anybody right now. They did an okay job stopping the run up in Seattle last week but again...that might have been O-Line issues on the Seahawks side rather than Jags D. Uhm, yea I'm going with Indy too.
Ravens @ Bills on CBS
Scott - After being dismantled by Peyton Manning in Week 1, the Ravens have bounced back nicely against the Browns and Texans. This game could be ugly in a couple of different ways; a blow-out loss for the Bills or a low scoring game between two limited offenses. The Ravens defense hasn't allowed an offensive touchdown in two weeks and the Bills have a rookie quarterback under center. I'll take the Ravens. Ravens 24 - Bills 7
Jess - I've got to admit, the Ravens look better this year than I thought they would after losing most of their team. Is Ray Rice back this week? I don't remember, but I'll take the Ravens too.
Bengals @ Browns on CBS
Scott - The Bengals are coming off a wild win at home to the Packers while the Browns found a way to win in Minnesota behind 3rd string quarterback Brian Hoyer. The Bengals need this game to go 2-0 in the division and given what happened in Minnesota, they can't take the Browns lightly. If Cincinnati can protect the ball better, they should be able to move at will on the Browns defense. Bengals 24 - Browns 13
Jess - Was that win against Green Bay a good win or a lucky one? I don't even know; I didn't get to watch it. I don't know anything about either of these teams yet or this game (I'll be better next week, I promise). I'm going to say Browns, just for the sake of argument.
Bears @ Lions on FOX
Scott - Matt Stafford has been known to be a generous quarterback and the Bears feast on that. I like the Bears to go 4-0 for the first time in seven years, but I expect it to be a typical NFL North war. Bears 27 - Lions 23
Jess - I'm gonna have to go with the Bears here too. Their defense looks just as great as it did last year, and is it my imagination or is their O-Line way better this year? Or maybe Cutler's finally getting better at the quick decision making. Whatever it is, Bears look scary this year.
Giants @ Chiefs on FOX
Scott - It's weird thinking a game in Week 4 is a must-win but IMO, if the Giants want to make anything of this season, they have to find a way to win this game. Unfortunately, the Chiefs defense is really good right now, and Eli Manning is not. Chiefs 24 - Giants 10
Jess - I'm really feeling the upset here and I have no idea why. The voices in my head are telling me the Giants will come out pissed off and luck out by maybe forcing a turnover or two and Eli will throw a couple of TD's to his own receivers. Who am I kidding? The reason I think the Giants will win is because everybody expects they won't.
Steelers & Vikings on CBS
Scott - Raise your hand if you thought that either of these teams would be winless heading into Week 4. To make matters worse, both teams have to travel across the Atlantic to play in London in Week 4. It doesn't matter where they play though. The Steelers have no running game and the Vikings have no passing attack. I'll take Adrian Peterson to run all over the aging Steelers defense. Vikings 20 - Steelers 13
Jess - Why are we continuing this London thing? Roger Goodell needs to go. Does he not realize national ≠ international? I understand exhibition games (kind of), but regular season games should not be played outside of the country. It's just ridiculous. Anyway, no I would never have imagined either of these teams would be 0-3 to start the season. I have no idea what's going to happen over there, so I'll go with the Vikings just because you said so.
Cardinals @ Buccaneers on FOX
Scott - Another matchup that has the potential to be ugly with a capital U. The Cardinals have been hit hard with the injury bug while the Bucs have benched starting quarterback Josh Freeman in favor of rookie Mike Glennon. Neither team has looked good on offense, so I expect the defenses to have their way. Whichever team makes the least mistakes will win. Bucs 17 - Cardinals 13
Jess - Man, the Bucs are a mess this year. I realize Freeman isn't great, and there are some issues not only with his performance but also with his leadership off the field as well. However, I can't help but think that the issues on this team go a lot deeper than that. I'm calling the Cards here simply because it seems like they have it together a lot more than Tampa Bay at this point.
Jets @ Titans on CBS
Scott - I think the Titans are starting to trend up behind Jake Locker while I am just not sold on Geno Smith. Also, the Titans have Chris Johnson, which trumps anything the Jets have offensively. Titans 23 - Jets 10
Jess - I agree, the Titans seem to be having a much better season after struggling for a few. I'm not sure about Geno - he may end up being a great quarterback for the Jets, but I don't think he'll do it against Tennessee today. I think they'll be fine at home against what seems to be a little bit shaky NYJ team.
Eagles @ Broncos on FOX
Scott - At this point, how can you go against Peyton Manning? Manning carves up another NFL defense while the Broncos defense does just enough to make life miserable for Michael Vick and the Eagles high octane offense. Broncos 34 - Eagles 14
Jess - Oh. My. Word. I will be the first to admit that I was WRONG about Peyton Manning not being the same after those surgeries. He's sure showing Irsay & Co. how wrong they were to let him go! I wish he wasn't doing it with the Broncos, but I can't help but hope he continues to kick butt. The Eagles may have a really fun offense to watch, but unless they get out there and score quickly, it's going to be a long day for them. I don't think they have the deffense to stop Peyton and all of his weapons. Which record do you think he'll break today?
Redskins @ Raiders on FOX
Scott - This has the potential to be a very entertaining football game. The Redskins defense is bad enough to let the Raiders' offense do some damage. That being said, Terrelle Pryor has to be cleared before any of this potentially comes true. I think he'll play, and I think this will be a close game. 'Skins get their first win. Redskins 27 - Raiders 23
Jess - From what little bit I've been able to see from the Redskins, it seems like they're starting to come together, and Griffin is looking better every week. I realize their defense stinks, but Pryor will either play and not be 100% (I don't care if he is cleared), or Flynn will play (and what happened to him?) - so this may very well be the perfect week for Washington to come out on top.
Cowboys @ Chargers on FOX
Scott - Multiple playoff appearances, disappearing in said playoff appearances, erratic QBs, high-flying offenses, solid-yet-underwhelming defenses, I feel like these two teams are exact mirror images of one another. Even though the Cowboys dominated my Rams in Week 3, I like the way the Chargers are playing much better. Plus, this is a road game for Dallas. Chargers 28 - Cowboys 20
Jess - The Cowboys are so bipolar. I know they look good this season, but for how long? And San Diego...I don't even know with them. They almost beat the Texans in the one game I did watch of theirs this season, and then they imploded in the second half. I'll take the Chargers if for no other reason than the fact that they're at home and it's only a matter of time before Romo has a game where he turns the ball over as much as Eli has been.
Patriots @ Falcons on NBC
Scott - The Patriots have done just enough to be 3-0 while the Falcons have struggled out the gate so far. I just don't think the Patriots offense has the fire power to keep up with what Matt Ryan has at his disposal, especially on the fast track in the Georgia Dome. Fighting Ashlies 34 - New England Patriots 20
Jess - Ashlie doesn't like it when we pick the Falcons, but the last time I did one of these, I picked against them and I was right. So, this time I'm going to say Falcons. It's time for the Pats to lose.
MNF Bonus Picks:
Dolphins @ Saints
Scott - I'm not surprised that the Saints are undefeated. The return of Sean Payton to the sidelines has been just what this team needed to get back into their offensive groove. Throw in Rob Ryan as defensive coordinator and suddenly the Saints look to be a legit contender once again. The Dolphins are the surprise team of the league so far with their 3-0 record, but I don't see the Saints being knocked off at home on Monday night. Saints 31 - Dolphins 14
Jess - I'm gonna wait on this pick.
Thank you, Scott! Looks like we only disagreed a few times, and I'm sure you'll be right on all of those that we disagreed on. I can't count the Seahawks game, since I didn't make a pick, but that's the one about which I'm most hoping you're correct!
And thank all of you for joining us today! Grab a drink, some snacks, a seat, and Q it up here all day and night for NFL Football on FanIQ!
