Fantasy Basketball Free Agents to Watch
Terrence Ross, SG/SF, Toronto Raptors
Owned in 12% of Yahoo! Leagues
The Rudy Gay trade really opened the gates for Terrence Ross in Toronto. Over the past two weeks, he’s averaging 13.8 points per game while hitting a meaty 3.2 treys per contest. His low turnovers (0.8) and solid FG% for his position (.456) over the same stretch make him an efficient option as well. No reason to think his high usage won’t continue as Toronto looks to develop their young talent this year.
Taj Gibson, PF/C, Chicago Bulls
Owned in 33% of Yahoo! Leagues
He’s still behind Carlos Boozer on the Bulls’ depth chart, but lately that really hasn’t mattered much for Gibson. He’s scored double digits in 5 straight games, shooting over 50% from the field in each game over that stretch while averaging nearly 30 minutes a night. He’s also tallied 7 blocks over his past four games to help his case even further.
James Johnson, SF/PF, Memphis Grizzlies
Owned in 5% of Yahoo! Leagues
Johnson has been quietly filling the stat sheet since making his debut for the Grizzlies on December 17th. Over his past three games, he’s averaging 11.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.7 steals, 2.0 blocks, 1 three and only 0.7 turnovers while shooting 56% from the field and 80% from the line. He’s playing about 25 minutes a night behind Tayshaun Prince and with those minutes likely to continue, he’s a great option out there in nearly every fantasy league.
Mike Scott, PF, Atlanta Hawks
Owned in 2% of Yahoo! Leagues
So far the main beneficiary of the Al Horford injury in terms of fantasy has been Paul Millsap, who exploded for 33 points and 13 rebounds against Charlotte Saturday night. But there’s going to be another big man stepping in to carry the load in Atlanta while Horford remains sidelined indefinitely and Scott is the most intriguing option. He’s been remarkably efficient over the past two weeks, shooting 60% from the field and 91.7% from the line while averaging 10.2 points and 1.3 threes per contest. On Saturday night, he scored 18 points behind 3 three pointers in just 21 minutes. Right now veteran Elton Brand is getting the starting nod but he’s been pretty ineffective so don’t be surprised if Scott finds his way into the starting role, and if he does, make sure you’re the first person to grab him off the free agent wire.
Jordan Farmar, PG, Los Angeles Lakers
Owned in 21% of Yahoo! Leagues
As the only Laker showing any resemblance at all to a capable point guard, Farmar definitely deserves to be watched. Friday he scored 16 points while adding 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals and 1 three in 31 minutes. While the minutes are the only guarantee to stay consistent until either Steve Blake returns in about 4 weeks or Steve Nash ever finds his way back on the court, Farmar should be able to help pad your team’s stats in one way or another based on usage alone.
