Each Tuesday of the NFL season we'll be highlighting the best and worst fantasy football performances. Not necessarily strictly by points, but those breakout efforts that likely won fantasy owners their matchups and also those who likely left owners throwing darts at the television.
Week 1 Fantasy Studs
1. Michael Turner - 220 yards rushing, 2 TDs
We all expected the Falcons to hand the ball to Turner often, but I don't think anyone expect this kind of outburst right off the bat. Thanks to Detroit's double digit missed tackles on Turner, he rushed to an Atlanta Falcons franchise record. Don't exactly expect this type of performance every week, especially next Sunday at Tampa Bay.
2. Reggie Bush - 51 yards rushing, 112 yards receiving, 1 TD
In standard scoring leagues, Bush had the 6th most points last week. What bust? For those owners who took a chance on Reggie this season were quickly rewarded, and chances are most of those owners won. Most notable is that Bush had his a longer run and reception than he had all of last season. What can we expect going forward? I doubt he'll top the 100 yard rushing mark often, but he should regularly top 100 total yards which is a nice asset if he's your No. 2 back.
3. Donovan McNabb - 361 yards passing, 3 TD
Missing his two starting receivers? No problem. Then again, nothing is a problem when the St. Louis Rams are lined up across the line of scrimmage. Let's see what he's got for us next Monday night in Dallas.
4. Eddie Royal - 146 yards receiving, 1 TD
No rookie wide receiver was as much a focus of a team's offense as Mr. Royal. Not bad for the 42nd pick. Owned in just 13% of ESPN fantasy football leagues, we can expect that to vault into the 90's by later this afternoon. Jay Cutler looked to Royal early and often. Pick him up. Pronto. He'll probably get you a punt return or two this season, as well.
5. Matt Forte - 123 yards rushing, 1 TD
I know Willie Parker had three rushing touchdown and scored my fantasy points, but that was hardly shocking. Forte was taken after Darren McFadden, Jonathan Stewart, Rashard Mendenhall, Felix Jones, and Chris Johnson, and you could argue he's going to be the best fantasy back of the group. If you went ahead and started him last week as your No. 2 back, nice work. The key with rookie RB's, particularly those that played in the lower Div 1 tier, is health. He's going to get his carries, you just have to hope he stays healthy.
Week 1 Fantasy Duds
1. Anything Cincinnati Bengal
I had the foresight to sit Carson Palmer (thank you very much), but chances are Palmer, Chad Johnson and TJ Houshmandzadeh were widely started across the fantasy landscape. As a whole, they combined for 8 points in regular scoring fantasy leagues. Hank Baskett had that many points in one catch.
2. Tom Brady
I know this isn't really fair, but his injury has left owners deciding whether they should really pick up Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan. Good luck.
3. Steven Jackson - 40 yards rushing
A top 10 pick across all leagues, Jackson rushed for only 40 yards against the Eagles. The Giants are up next, so I'm not I like his chances any better next week. Missing most of preseason, owners will have to wait a few more weeks for him to get back to form.
4. Maurice Jones-Drew - 37 yards receiving, 13 yards rushing
Where was the dynamic playmaker? 13 yards rushing? He should have fallen off the bus with that many yards.
5. Marques Coltson - 26 yards receiving
The Saints offense had a great day. Drew Brees passed for 343 yards, so a good day for Marques, right? Wrong. Devrey Henderson and Reggie Bush stole all of his passes, which left owners getting just 2 points from their No. 1 WR. Ouch.
Who was the biggest stud and dud this first week in Fantasy Football?
I'm glad Parker did have such an amazing game. Coming off the injury that ended his season last year, he showed he was back to full form. One little note though, anyone who watched the game probably saw him run out of bounds on a long 2nd half run when he could've gone a few more yards. He explained last night on the local news he didn't want to risk anything. I don't blame him, he had a huge defender coming at him full force from the side. If I was playing my first full game after tearing an ACL and saw a huge guy coming at me with all his might, I'd probably do the same thing!
You know these people, Pat. They want the best performer on the team to be in lights. If not, they act like the guy got no credit whatsoever. I agree with Jason on this. I was wondering why he didn't list Parker, but when I read the comment about how it was no big shock, I understood why he wasn't listed. If only there were more Steelers fans who realized (which I did) that if Parker was back to 100%, he'd easily get 100 yards on Houston. Obviously he was, and he did, and most people saw it as just another day at the office for Parker.
Dont expect Royal to have the same type of game again. As a big Bronco fan, I am thrilled by him. Dont forget Marshall comes back this week and he is gonna take some of those balls away. Plus MeAngelo Hall doesnt play for the Chargers
