We'll do this every Friday during normal NFL weeks, but I'll be sharing my thoughts on the upcoming week's fantasy football starts & sits. Most choices are obvious, you don't need someone to tell you that Marion Barber is a good start against Cleveland so we'll shy away from those and focus more on the decisions that you should take some risks on.
Opening week always provides plenty of surprises and A LOT of free agents stampedes the following Tuesday. Here's my take on Week 1:
Quarterbacks
You can usually pencil in Tom Brady and Peyton Manning as the top fantasy quarterback each week, and while they are still must starts, I doubt either will top the charts in week one. That spot will belong to Kurt Warner. I'll allow you a brief moment to laugh. Warner threw for 484 yards in his last game against San Francisco, and threw for over 300 yards in three of his last four games. Expect at least 300 yards again and a couple touchdowns. I don't think the Cardinals will be able to run effectively and resort primarily to the pass.
I like Donovan McNabb to have a top 5 week at home against the St. Louis defense. Gone is the big play threat in Kevin Curtis, but DeSean Jackson appears capable of that void for now. The dump off to Brian Westbrook always help as well, not to mention the 3-4 you can pick up from rushing yards.
Others I like for a solid week: Tony Romo @ CLE, Jon Kitna @ ATL, Aaron Rodgers vs MIN
As a Carson Palmer owner, I must inform you I've chosen to sit him out this first week. Yesterday was the first practice that Chad Johnson, T.J. Houshmandzadeh all practiced together. Baltimore's defense is hardly what it used to be, but I don't like Carson at all on the road. At the very least, if you have a safer option, go with it. If not, saddle up.
On the other side of the Ohio, I also recommend a wait and see approach with Derek Anderson. The Browns are at home vs Dallas which helps, but Anderson has missed some valuable practice time and looks like he's still a little shaky with his confidence. He'll throw a touchdown or two, but I expect a few turnovers as well.
Others I don't recommend: Matt Hasselbeck @ BUF, Matt Schaub @ PIT
Running Backs
Once again, I'm going to stay away from telling you I like the obvious choices. Of course you should start LT, Marion Barber, Adrian Peterson, etc. Although I'll say I don't expect anything special from LT and AD.
Joseph Addai is an obvious start each week, but some may be concerned against the Bears in week one. Don't be. With Peyton Manning's injury, expect Addai to carry a heavy load and catching a significant amount of short passes as Manning works to get his rythym back.
Another running back that's been a little under the radar this preseason is Clinton Portis. Expect him to make his presence felt early Thursday night in New York. The last time out against the G-Men, he ran up 126 yards and a touchdown. That was a defense complete with Strahan and Umenyiora. I have no idea what to expect from that defense tomorrow night.
Other middle-tier backs I like: Kevin Smith @ ATL, Ricky Williams vs NYJ, and if desperate Ahmad Bradshaw vs WAS
You probably have no choice but to start Jamal Lewis, but I don't expect more than 80 yards. You could luck out with a goal line TD and do alright, but Cleveland will be trailing Dallas by a couple touchdowns and go to the air for most of the second half. The same will happen for Frank Gore against Arizona, where fantasy owners are reliant upon J.T. O'Sullivan to move the ball and open up the pressure up front.
Other backs I don't like: Thomas Jones @ MIA, Ryan Grant vs MIN, Julius Jones @ BUF
Wide ReceiverI'm buying the hype around Jerricho Cotchery who will be Brett Favre's favorite target early and often. Over 125 yards and a touchdown is what I'm betting on. Anquan Boldin has done a lot of talking this preseason, but he'll do that with his hands against the 49ers, catching two touchdowns from Warner. I'm also extremely high on Santonio Holmes being a top five receiver this week, catching at least one long touchdown pass from Big Ben versus Houston. Both Detroit wide receivers should haul in over 100 yards, as well.
Marc Bulger doesn't have many other options to threw to, but I don't like Torry Holt this week. He'll see double coverage from the Eagles D and though you probably don't have a better back up option, I'd roll the dice. I don't know that I'd start Chad Johnson, where one bad hit early could take him out leaving you with zero points from your No. 1 WR position. And just in case you've fallen asleep, don't start Steve Smith... either one.
Tight End
Like: L.J. Smith vs STL, Chris Cooley @ NYG, Alge Crumpler vs JAC
Don't: Antonio Gates vs CAR, Owen Daniels @ PIT, Desmond Clark @ IND
Kicker
Whoever it is you drafted in the last round will be just fine. If you drafted a kicker before the last round, you're an idiot. If forced to single out just one this week I'll go with Mason Crosby for the Packers.
Defense
You obviously have to like the Patriots (vs KC) and Colts (vs CHI) but I also expect big weeks from the Cowboys (@ CLE) and I wouldn't be afraid to start the Bills vs Seattle at home.
