Week 8 Studs And Duds: Westbrook Is Back, But Who The Hell Is Donnie Avery?

Week 8 has come and gone. While we're at the halfway point in the NFL season, fantasy football is more than half over. Injuries are killing people's fantasy teams, and every week it seems like another player pops up out of nowhere to have a dominant week. Sometimes, you get lucky, and he leads your team to a big win. Sometimes, your opponent has "that guy," and you get hosed.

Here are the Studs and Duds from week 7. The studs are some guys who did a lot better than expected, and the duds are obviously the ones who fell short of expectations, and may have cost someone a win last week. Enjoy.

QB: David Garrard, Jaguars - Garrard tied Philip Rives for the highest scoring QB of the week in Yahoo public leagues with 24 points. He threw for 283 yards, 2 TD's and no INT's. He also added 59 rushing yards. After combining for 4 TD and 4 INT in the first 6 games, Garrard had his first solid game, fantasy-wise, even though it resulted in a 23-17 loss to the Browns.

Honorable Mentions: Philip Rivers, Chargers (24 points), Drew Brees, Saints (23), Matt Schaub, Texans (23)

RB: Leonard Weaver, Seahawks and Brian Westbrook, Eagles - Normally, I would only give Westbrook an honorable mention. He was taken with the 3rd pick on average, and people had high expectations for him from the start. However, injuries have slowed him down a lot, and his performance so far hasn't been helped by missing two games. But against the Falcons, vintage Westbrook showed up, as he rushed 22 times for 167 yards and 2 TD's, as well as 42 receiving yards, to lead the league in fantasy scoring with 32 points. Weaver was a surprise to most people, as the Seattle FB caught 4 passes for 116 yards, including TD's of 43 and 62 yards.

Honorable Mentions: Leon Washington, Jets (21), LaDainian Tomlinson, Chargers (22)

WR: Santana Moss, Redskins and Donnie Avery, Rams - Moss had 140 receiving yards and a TD, and chipped in a TD on an 80 yard punt return as well. He led all WR's with 26 fantasy points. Avery had a breakout week against the Patriots' mediocre pass defense, catching 6 passes for 163 yards and a TD, for 23 fantasy points.

Honorable Mentions: Steve Smith, Panthers (23), Roddy White, Falcons (23)

TE: Dallas Clark, Colts - The entire Colts team could have been listed as duds this week after their poor (but expected) showing against the Titans, except for Clark. He caught 7 passes for 94 yards and 2 TD's, good for 21 fantasy points, leading all TE's for the week.

Honorable Mentions: Antonio Gates, Chargers (15), Tony Gonzalez, Chiefs (13)

Defense: Seattle Seahawks: The Seahawks scored 19 fantasy points, which is huge for a defense. Aided by Patrick Kerney's fumble recovery and Josh Wilson's INT return for a TD, as well as 5 sacks, they were dominant this week.

Honorable Mention: New York Giants (16)

QB: Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers - Big Ben was monumentally disappointing this week, for anyone who was expecting productivity out of him. He threw for only 189 yards, with 1 TD and a whopping 4 INT's. He scored only 7 fantasy points for the unfortunate owners who started him against the Giants.

RB: Maurice Jones-Drew, Jaguars - MJD rushed 12 times against the Browns, but only managed 29 yards. Fantasy owners who were hoping for a big week from him were left out in the cold, as he only managed to score 3 fantasy points.

Dishonorable Mention: Ronnie Brown, Dolphins (4)

WR: Terrell Owens, Cowboys - This is TO's second straight week as a dud. Not a coincidence, it's the second straight game that Tony Romo has been out with a pinky injury. Owens caught only 3 passes for 33 yards, and failed to find the end zone for the 3rd game in a row.

Dishonorable Mentions: Reggie Wayne, Colts (2), Hines Ward, Steelers (), Plaxico Burress, Giants (1)

Defense: Indianapolis Colts - If you played the Colts defense this week, you were basically penalized a point. They allowed 31 points to the Titans, without any sacks, fumble recoveries or interceptions. The fact that they allowed 3 TD's to the Titans' vaunted rushing attack of Chris Johnson and LenDale White was no surprise, they also allowed Kerry Collins to complete 24 of 37 passes for a 65% completion rate.

Dishonorable Mentions: San Diego Chargers (-2), Cincinnati Bengals (-3)

I'd like to thank my 49ers for allowing Leonard Weaver to become a fantasy stud for one week. We'll see who they allow to have their star turn next week.
