Sir Alex Ferguson believes the English Premier League title has already turned into a two-horse race between Manchester United and Manchester City. The gaffer hailed the two Manchester clubs as favorites for the English Premier League trophy this season.

According to the Old Trafford boss the two derbies between Manchester United and Manchester City will play a crucial role in the title race. The two Manchester clubs meets for their first derby of the season at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The mouthwatering showdown occurs with Manchester United on top of the English Premier League table. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side has a three-point lead over their archrivals, but in case of defeat Manchester City will become the new leaders because of a better goal difference.

Sir Alex Ferguson has already described victory over Manchester City as one of his biggest wins in the 26 years he has been with Manchester United. Therefore, both teams understand the importance of victory on Sunday.

Seven points separate Manchester United from third-placed Chelsea. Sir Alex Ferguson believes the Champions League winners are too far away to compete for the English Premier League title now.

A last minute clutch took Manchester City to a memorable English Premier League title last season. Manchester City won the English Premier League title on better goal difference from Manchester United in the last 10 minutes of the season. Moreover, Roberto Mancini’s men grabbed pulsating victories at home and away against Manchester United.

“I think it is going to be close,” Sir Alex Ferguson commented on the title race. “With that gap over Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham it'll be difficult for the two of us to collapse and let another team in. I think it will be between the two of us.”

Sir Alex Ferguson also confessed that the two derby defeats to Manchester City cost Manchester United the English Premier League title. A victory at Etihad Stadium means Manchester United will acquire a six-point lead over Manchester City, nonetheless, Sir Alex Ferguson understands that such leads can be broken with ease.

“Without question. Particularly that 6-1 defeat we had [at home]. It turned things right around. It cost us,” Sir Alex Ferguson said. “We've won the league after being 12 points behind, and we've lost the league after being 11 points ahead... so you can never be sure in this league. You can lose to anyone - we've lost to Norwich already - but that's the type of league we're in, that's a tough league.”
