Every Manchester United fan has a special place in their heart for Cristiano Ronaldo, even though the Portuguese football icon left Old Trafford to join Real Madrid. Cristiano Ronaldo did grant Manchester United with an opportunity to make millions out of the move, but in his case money has become a secondary issue.
The father-son relationship between Sir Alex Ferguson and Cristiano Ronaldo is often highlighted by media. Over the years, this relationship has become the fundamental reason for generating transfer rumors which link Cristiano Ronaldo to a move back to Manchester United.
Many Manchester United fans believe in ‘the Return of the Prodigal Son’. Sir Alex Ferguson hopes this episode will take place in his lifetime, but the Scotsman understands that the stark reality of this happening is actually “unreal”.
The Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson believed Cristiano Ronaldo has now become an “unbuyable” player in the football market. However, Sir Alex Ferguson admits he hopes for the Portuguese star to return to his old club one day.  
Sir Alex Ferguson and Cristiano Ronaldo spent six years together at Manchester United, before Cristiano Ronaldo left Old Trafford for Real Madrid in 2009. Manchester United were paid £80 million in transfer fees, which still stands as a world record for transfer fees.
Cristiano Ronaldo has been in phenomenal form since moving into Real Madrid. The 27-year-old Portugal international has scored 165 goals in 162 appearances for Real Madrid.
In an interview after Manchester United’s shock 1-0 defeat to Norwich City, Sir Alex Ferguson confessed he wished Cristiano Ronaldo was still in his side. Sir Alex Ferguson reckons Real Madrid got a bargain price for Cristiano Ronaldo.
“I'd like to think it would be [possible to get Ronaldo back], but I don't think it will be. You're talking about incredible amounts of money now,” Sir Alex Ferguson said.
“What would you think his value would be? He's definitely unbuyable. Who could afford to buy him?
“He was definitely good value for Madrid, but he always wanted to play for them. It was his boyhood dream. I'm not saying he'll stay there forever, you never know. How do you know we've not got a buy-back clause for him?”
In the six years Cristiano Ronaldo spent at Manchester United he won a Champions League trophy, three Premier League titles and an FA Cup. Sir Alex Ferguson believes Cristiano Ronaldo’s performance in these six years make him one of the greatest players in Manchester United’s history.
“He's an unbelievable player - one of the best. We have a pantheon of great players and Ronaldo definitely compares with any of them,” Sir Alex Ferguson said.
“Although he had a natural talent, he is in many ways manufactured himself. He practiced and practiced. He had a bit of the Eric Cantona about him in that way. Paul Scholes is still the same.”
