Ferguson wants to knock Liverpool off their perch again – this time it’s Champions League
After knocking them over their perch in England, many expect Sir Alex Ferguson to pursue Liverpool’s record in Europe. In spite of his age, Sir Alex Ferguson has vowed to eclipse Liverpool’s landmark record of five Champions League trophies.
The Old Trafford boss believes breaking Liverpool’s record of five European Cups will be the highlight of his achievement at Manchester United. After entering the Last 16 stage of the Champions League, Sir Alex Ferguson declared that one of his final targets would be steal the title of being the best English club in Europe from Liverpool.
Sir Alex Ferguson thwarted Liverpool’s record of 18 Premiership titles two seasons ago by grabbing Manchester United’s 19th title. Now, Sir Alex Ferguson admits that one of his biggest regrets is his failure to push Manchester United into winning more Champions League awards under his era.
The legendary Scotsman claims he wants to stay in charge of Manchester United as long as it takes to set this record straight. Manchester United has won Champions League on three occasions; 1968, 1999 and 2008. Manchester United needs two more titles to level with Liverpool and three more to break their record.
“In terms of the history of our club, we should have won more European titles and I want to win it again and get into the bracket of winners like Liverpool, our biggest rivals, Bayern Munich and Ajax,” Sir Alex Ferguson said.
“I get really frustrated when I think about the opportunities we have had to win it, but you can't be greedy. You look at my career and I have won two European Cups and the Cup-winners' Cup and I am proud of that, but I want more in the Champions League and we really have a chance to push for that in the next few years.
“Barcelona and Real Madrid will go close again this year, but I think the English teams will do well again. I also think a threat will come from Borussia Dortmund, who have looked good in the competition so far this season.”
Manchester United have a decent squad to challenge for the Champions League honors this season. Robin van Persie is expected to play a huge role in their Champions League campaign. The 29-year-old Dutchman scored another goal in Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Braga. The Netherlands international has now scored 11 goals in 14 appearances for Manchester United.
“We have bought a player of great maturity at the peak of his career,” Sir Alex Ferguson said. “He looks after himself and is a fit lad. Hopefully will give us four or five years because so far he has been absolutely fantastic.
“Robin [van Persie] was instrumental in getting us further up the field (against Braga). We played a little bit more in behind their midfield once Robin [van Persie] came on, and obviously he took his goal really well. It fell to him in a very good position on his left foot, he saw the goalkeeper probably trying to get to the ball a bit too quickly, and managed to hit it into the back of the net. It was a great finish.”
