Fiesta Bowl: West Virginia Mountaineers vs Oklahoma Sooners

Oh yeah, there's a bowl game tonight. I'm not sure how I feel about these two games played post New Year's. The title game makes sense to have by itself, but I'd have rather had these two games mixed in with the January 1st fun. Did we really need Texas Tech-Virginia?

Anyways, onto a game that despite my earlier post, I am fairly excited to watch. I remain skeptical of the Big East and I believe the 'Eers will be exploited tonight. Their coaching situation certainly doesn't help.

FanIQ says Boomer Sooner (83%)
My Pick: Oklahoma 42, West Virginia 24
Confidence: 25

Q it up here. Sadly, just five games remain in this season.

There coaching situation certainly doesn't help.

Earlier today, I saw somewhere the stat that bowl teams with interim coaches are 0-6 this bowl season.  That really stuck out to me.

I can't believe WVU had to give 7500 tickets back to the Fiesta Bowl because they couldnt sell them. That is weak. They should stop crying about Coach Rod and support their team.

Hawaii still sold 2500 more tickets than WVU did, and Hawaii got crap for only requesting 10,000 instead of the normal 15,000.

Man, Bradford had his man open and just flat-out overthrew him on 2nd down, before throwing that pick.  WVU's pressure might have gotten in his head already.

If you are bringing a blitz against WVU, you better stop White around the line of scrimmage, or he is going to break it.

Well if you're really into it ... I'd go either drink for every "Boomer Sooner" ... and or for every time Noel Devine makes someone miss.

1.  Hear the band play "boomer sooner"
2. Drink
3. Pass out before halftime

Alternatively, drink every time you notice the incompetence of Fox's TV coverage and reserve a room at the hospital for tonight.

This country has done some great things, but I am appalled that there was a time when it did things like keep African-Americans from playing in a bowl game.

I'd never heard of the San Francisco team before, but I'll definitely have to check this book out.

These Fox guys are dumber than a box of hair.  "it's a safety! it's a safety!!. . . oh, and here come the refs to make the correct call. . . "

They've had to majorly correct themselves 2 or 3 times already this game and their replay wizardry is terrible.  Why, Fox, why?

What I also liked was that the score also momentarily said 20-11, as if running the ball through the back of your own end zone would somehow give your team 2 points.

Haha, I didn't catch that;  that's great.

Too early to go for two there, IMO.  If OU scores another TD before WV scores again, they will be forced to go for two again, instead of being up by 3.

As I was typing. . . ballsy move by Stoops on the onside kick;  Sooner D better step up.

It definitely is;  I have a brother who lives in New Hampshire too, so my family gets bombarded by this primary crap.  If I was a political person, I'd probably eat it up, but I'm far from it.

On the game, Devine is awesome.  It would be awfully frustrating to have to play D against this WVU team.

According to Fox's announcers, OU has played against that vaunted spread offense of Texas A&M.  I know what they meant, and I would probably write it off as a verbal gaffe if this was one of a few mistakes, but this is just bush league.

WVU is looking awfully good.  How did they crap the bed against Pitt again?  And Bob Stoops BCS bowl record continues to take a hit. . .

Wow, second year in a row I've come back from work to a Fiesta Bowl surprise.  I'd like to sit here and toot my own horn about how I think West Virginia was better than most people gave them credit for, but I certainly didn't see this coming.  Whether its fair or not theres going to be a lot of questions about Bob Stoop's big game coaching abilities tomorrow.

There's no question that Stoops' big game coaching abilities deserve some questioning.

I, too, thought WVU was incredibly underrated before the Pitt game.  This team is incredibly talented on offense, but their D might be even more impressive tonight.  They look like they should be in the national title game, and they would have, had they not crapped the bed against Wannstache's boys.

Haha, I guess I better watch my back.  Yes, he's been incredibly good for OU and should be untouchable there for what he's accomplished.  With that said, when the lights have been the brightest since his national title, his teams have been pretty underwhelming.

I think most teams would have overlooked Boise last year. The fact that Georgia killed Hawaii last night is a testament to that. Other than tonight (maybe WVU is that good) when has he choked in a big game? They beat #1 Missouri to get to this game. I think  LSU was better than OU in the last title game they reached. (BTW, in 9 years he's reached 3 BCS title games) The only game in which I thought he choked was the Big XII title game against KSU a few years back. Yet, even with the loss they went to the BCS title game.

I don't know where to look it up quickly, but it's not just that his teams have lost, but it seems like they have been dominated to the point where they didn't belong there, with the exception of Boise State.  Perhaps my perception isn't reality, but it sure seems like his teams get killed in the biggest bowl games.

Edit to add:  Again, I think he's a fantastic coach, as I don't think people remember what OU's program was like before he came there, but I think his "Big Game Bob" moniker can be discarded, especially after tonight.

Other than the 2005 Orange Bowl where USC killed them 55-19, the losses have been close. I agree that he is no longer "Big Game Bob," but lets not question the big game coaching of him just yet. Mack Brown at Texas got the label of not winning big games because he couldn't beat Oklahoma. Lets not knock Stoops because he doesn't win a national title every year or because he lost a few bowl games. BCS Bowls match up some of the best teams in the country. In 9 seasons, the man has gotten to 5 BCS games.

Everybody agrees we need a playoff....but unless you have the money to pay off: Tostitos, Fed Ex, Nokia, and the numerous other companies that pay the Big Conferences to have their names plastered all over the bowls its never going to happen. So until then we can all look forward the more Insight.com bowls and more Georgia vs Hawaii!!!
