Before we delve into the NBA Finals predictions, one last comment on the departed Detroit Pistons. Team officials are reporting that Flip Saunders will remain as the Pistons head coach.Flip has been the target for Detroit's failures. Not the sole target, but let's safely say 95%. The fans, media and blogs are 80% off target.
Chris Webber needs to share the blame.
Now, let me first say that Flip Saunders will never be confused with a great coach. He was out-coached by Mike Brown. Read that again ... 'out-coached by Mike Brown.' That's bad. He's not completely incompetent like we've been quite to suggest, but perhaps finding a solution for Lebron James isn't an exact science. Should Joe Dumars decide to fire Flip, I have no problem, so long as Chris Webber doesn't return.
The Pistons pride themselves on being a TEAM. Prior to this year they were the example on unselfish play and ideal chemistry. Then Dumars made the unfortunate signing of Webber. Despite all his basketball gifts, Webber has never bought into team basketball. Webber has never been a winner .. (in my best Donald Trump voice) Chris is a loser. No team he'll ever be on will win a championship.
Brian Windhorst in his Cavs Blog last week mentioned there was a lot of off the record talk about the Pistons diminished team chemistry. There weren't names named, but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out.
Chris Webber on the court during the Cavs and Bulls series would repeatedly yell out "You're not taking MY title." That's precisely the talk that defines his NBA career. I, ME, MY.
Chris won three state championships in high school, but once he was paid to play basketball his teams failed to win. At Michigan, the Fab 5 enjoyed some success in the Big Dance, but left Ann Arbor without a championship of any kind to show. (of course, they'd have been taken away) On the biggest possession of his collegiate career, Webber choked ... twice. His NBA career should speak for itself. Most teams were dreadful, those that made the playoffs ultimately failed.
Detroit shouldn't be too concerned about the Lebron era. Just get rid of Webber (Flip wouldn't hurt) and they'll be back in the Finals next year. Let Tayshaun and Chauncey lead the way
