Florida LB Eye-Gouges Georgia RB Caught on Replay
More Reasons to Hate Florida - They Try to Injure Opponents
71

Apparently on Saturday, LB Brandon Spikes of the Florida Gators, felt that winning 31-10 in the 3rd quarter was not enough punishment to the Georgia Bulldogs. After the play was clearly over, he jammed his fingers into the face mask of a Georgia RB, working them in deeper and deeper in an attempt to blind the RB.

Now I think Oregon's RB Blount got what he deserved for his after the game punch. But what punishment should this star player from the Gators receive?

If you ask me, its suspension from the program this year, including any postseason play. Unless of course, the Gators LIKE this type of play from its football stars. Then he will receive kudos in the next defensive film session.

Spikes is the dirtiest player on the gators. Are you kidding? He has emotional issues, see his tow truck incident. He has shown a thousand times he is a dirty player. Hitting Christian Ponder when he was 4 yards out of bounds last year. Give me a break, he has not shown signs? He's shown that he is a dirty player time and time again. Take off the orange and blue glasses Tone. I agree with the writer of this. Suspend him for the year because if the worst happened then its too little too late for Mr Ealey.

If the hand just goes into the facemask itself, then yea, I could see room to try and come up with another explanation. However, with that sort of digging motion Spikes has in there, head down, looking straight at the ball and then where his hand is, it's not even close to the football - it's hard to find anyway to come up with a conclusion other than the obvious.

Brandon Spikes should definitely be suspended, without question, it's just "How long?". I'd be glad to see him out for the rest of the season, and being he's a senior, his Florida career, but somehow I see him finding his way into the NC game if Florida makes it.

He should be punished to the limit...the other example the guy said something and the player hit him...this was a helpless guy on the bottom of the pile and the Gator TRIED to blind him.

Hey if he did it on purpose and which it does look that way then I agree he should be suspended, but as a Gator fan I have to hope it was not intentional.

Hey Turk You have to give me more than hitting Ponder out of bonds to convince me his been a dirty player, people getting hit out of bonds happens in just about every game I have done it my self it's not always intentional.

I think we'd all be surprised what goes on in the bottom of the pile in a scrum on the field.  This is a link to a play in the Illinois/Michigan game from Saturday where a Michigan offensive lineman took a liberty and hit an Illinois guy below the belt after the Illini recovered a Tate Forcier fumble.  I agree that there is no place for it in sports and if the protocol holds true, I know this Michigan lineman will be suspended for next week's game against Purdue

I shudder when I think the things I have seen and unfortunately felt at the bottoms of dogpiles, fumbles are the worst, if you ever want to retaliate or cheap shot another player sudden changes of possession are often the ticket and back in my day turfing the QB after a pick was just good fun.  Seriously though the eye is very delicate and if he had really hurt this kid then to quote the late great Warren Zevon: "Lawyers, Guns and Money" could have gotten involved.

If everyone remembers Spikes got his helmet ripped off he went to the sidelines and was having drops put in his eyes when he game back onto the field he was sporting a face shield, so it looks like he might have been poked in the eye earlier. I am by no means condoning what he did, if he intentionally poke the guys eye regardless of the payback factor it was wrong and he deserves what ever he gets but I can understand the emotion and reasoning behind it.

I agree with the "play them at their best" mantra, but to me that goes as far as injuries are concerned. You want the opponent as healthy as they can be, suspensions should be looked in another light. There is a reason for suspensions, mostly at fault for the player himself, and if the school feels he should not be eligible to play, then there's no reason to award him the chance to play in another NC game.

LOL! This Gator fan is staying out of it - I just hope we can beat Alabama in the SEC title game (assuming the Tide makes it) to even have a shot at the NC game

You are absolutely right - he did it intentionally and he needs to be suspended for the rest of the season and postseason.

Holy Homerism Batman!!!!!!!!!!!! That was most definitely intentional...or internal as you put it...

Spikes is dirty...what about the play where it was blown dead and he basically headbutted the UGA RB ?
He should get suspended...for the rest of the season...you do not try and poke out someone's eye...It does not take a lot to detatch a retina. I've seen many a basketball game where a finger or hand to the eye causes damage.

As for the Crystal football....what a joke it will be this year. Oregon may be playing the best of any team out there, yet Boise knocked them off so they will get no consideration, plus we still have all those undefeated teams. People may bash Iowa for struggling against Indiana, but the wind played a huge part of that game and those INT's...Sorry, but a Texas/(Florida/Bama Winner) NC is not going to crown a champion this year..not even close.

But could you imagine how horrible it will be to sit out one half against Vandy?

He'll know never to do another thing like this ever again because who wants to sit down and do nothing for 30 entire minutes against a immensely inferior team??

Apparently you miss the point. At that time It looked bad and as a Gator fan I was hoping it was an accident. Turns out it wasn't and he deserves what ever he gets.

You don't have to tell me about eyes I lost my right one in April at work. I know how easy it is to lose one and I am very disappointed in Spikes. Should he be suspend for more than a half yes the whole year I don't know not my call.

As I recall it it was Spikes that got headbutted as well as Tebow for that matter. There is no love loss between the Dawgs and the Gators and it showed all day on both sides of the field.

Are you kidding me. Teams like TCU have one advantage and it's not their D or O it's the fact they have nothing to lose and everything to win.

Go ahead and keep PQing, but if you are trying to tell me if the guy was on your team you wouldn't hope it was an accident no matter how it looked then you are a damn lie.

It has been established he did it and I agree with all of you he should get punished and for more then a half, so get off my back.

Of course we would hope it was an accident.  However, after watching the video, it CLEARLY was no accident.

The 1/2 game suspension does not surprise me.  Urban Meyer isn't exactly known as a disciplinarian.  Haven't there been about 25+ Gators arrested on his watch?

Dude, I would even waste my breath anymore with these fools. If the Gators weren't the #1 team in the country, this probably wouldn't even an issue. Again, if it was their team, they would be looking for a way to stick up for their player. Cheap shots happen all the time in games, it's just nobody cares if it's say, Rice vs Western Kentucky.....

I commented after my first look and that's what I felt at the time I have since retracted that based on what I have now seen and read.

I don't know about your other number there I have not heard that, but I guarantee you it happens all over the country in every program not just Florida.

This is true, but it comes with the territory.  I played football my entire life and while groin shots and punches to the gut were common on the bottom of the pile, eye gouging was very rare.  If it wasn't so blatant, I doubt it would garner so much attention.  Suspending your top defensive player for HALF the game against Vanderbilt doesn't exactly send a message if you ask me.  Especially with the track record of players getting into trouble on Meyer's watch.

Unless it's a NCAA suspension, whatever he gets is not a mandatory thing...There is no rule saying that the team HAS to suspend him. I love how you keep saying that players have gotten arrested. The player in question has never been arrested.....also, 9 of those charges, were dropped. And if you notice, Meyer is pretty strict about the players and their punishment when getting arrested, but this has absolutely nothing to do with the Spikes incident.

There is no precedent for this because it rarely happens, at least in plain sight.  So Brandon Spikes has never been arrested?  What does that have to do with a blatant eye gouge?  Absolutely nothing!  9 charges were dropped out of those 20+ arrests?  I wonder the 'good ole boys' that support Gator football had anything to do with that.

Meyer is strict with the players that have gotten in trouble?  News to me.  If he's so stern with these young men, why is it still happening?

Here's a pretty good article from a Florida alumnus who is fed up.

I 100% agree, but if he eye gouged another player, I would expect him to miss more than half a football game.

they only suspended him for half a game, that they are favored to win by about 30 points. so even the people in charge realise it is just part of the game. not a pretty part, but a part.

Where were they on the depth chart? ok then. its easy to kick off a third stringer. Kiffin has kicked off a starter in Brandon Warren.

The reason they weren't starting in the first place is because Urban Meyer only starts men, if a player does not have his head on strait he is not going to get playing time, until Urban Meyer notices a improvement in their attitude.

clearly cameron newton was a boy. get off your high horse john. urban meyer doesnt know their every thought and every move. he cant predict that so dont even try to justify their depth chart position as such.
