Complacency Is the Seminoles' Biggest Threat For 2014
So what will be the Seminoles’ toughest game this season?
Well to be honest, Florida State should be heavily favored every time they strap up the pads in 2014. I’m sorry; I don’t see Notre Dame, Clemson or Florida beating the Seminoles, especially in Tallahassee.
But just because Florida State is expected to win, doesn’t necessarily mean that’ll happen.
College football is so great because an entire season can be changed with just one game; each Saturday is precious to every head coach, especially for the team that is going against the defending national champion.
However, I’m sure Jimbo Fisher will remind his team every week that the opposing team has circled this game on the calendar. Even if the Seminoles didn’t win it all last season, it’s still Florida State.
The biggest threat to the Seminoles in 2014 is themselves. Complacency is a dangerous thing.
This team lost quite a few playmakers to the 2014 NFL Draft. Guys like Lamarcus Joyner, Devonta Freeman, Timmy Jernigan and Kelvin Benjamin won’t be there to make the big play. It’s all on Jameis Winston and company to carry the torch.
But Florida State has had great success in recruiting, and it doesn't rebuild, it reloads at this point. So you won’t see any drop off in terms of talent. What you will see is guys who have been itching to play for awhile and some freshman superstars who can contribute right away.
What Seminole fans should be worried about are players getting a sense of entitlement. Some guys may continue to feed off the success of last year. The hunger and sense of urgency needs to be back again this season.
You could feel the intensity and focus in 2013. Watching that team go into Death Valley on national television and destroying Clemson in convincing way was beyond impressive. That was a statement. You have to wonder if the 2014 team is capable of that intensity again.
Last year’s Florida State team was on a mission. The result was a BCS National Championship and a Heisman trophy for Winston. But can the Seminoles put aside last year’s hardware and do it again?
If these guys want it as bad as they did last season, I wouldn’t bet against them.
