God I love Florida State. Pretty much every year something utterly ridiculous happens on that campus involving the football team. Meanwhile, good 'ol boy Bobby Bowden simply says "Aw shucks" and everyone looks past the fact that his program continues to climb the ranks of the most corrupt programs in history. And this year has been extra special so far. In five of FSU’s nine games this season, one or more wide receivers have missed a game because of a suspension. Now that takes talent.
And that number may soon increase. Today's news out of Florida St. is that about half of the Seminole football team jumped the FSU African American fraternity chapter Phi Beta Sigma at the FSU student union yesterday.
According to Florida State Police Department spokesman Major Jim Russell, over 10 people were involved in a “large brawl” that took place at the Student Union at approximately 12:37 p.m. Russell could not release any names, but did confirm with Warchant.com that multiple football players may have been involved.
One online message board, courtesy of Deadspin, seems to suggest that this was no minor brawl either.
Some of the Sigmas were sent to the hospital. The football players seemed possessed they were body slamming kids and throwing chairs. It was crazy.
Now while police wouldn't say who's involved, there have been multiple radio and on-line reports stating that wide receiver Taiwan Easterling was initially involved and then other receivers came to his aid. So, in other words, expect the team to be somewhat thin at that position this Saturday.
I'm continually amazed that Bowden somehow escapes the wrath of media pundits while JoePa gets criticized for having eased his recruiting standards and letting in players of slightly more questionable character. When has Bowden ever NOT had athletes of questionable character on his football team? Perhaps the problem is that it's been going on so long at Florida St. that we're just numb to it now. We forget about the fact that coming off their national championship in 1993, nine Florida State players violated NCAA rules by allowing agents to bankroll a shopping spree at a Foot Locker store. It was a huge Sports Illustrated story at the time. And we also forget the 2007 cheating scandal that left FSU missing almost half their team for a bowl game. And amidst that there are numerous suspension, arrests, you name it.
Anyway, what can I say. This program is a mess, and has been for a long time. But hey, they're bowl eligible for the 27th year, the longest current streak. So maybe things aren't that bad after all.
