The former Browns owner, who was the subject of Cleveland's contempt for moving the team to Baltimore, passed away early this morning at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He died of natural causes.
Modell had a long history as an NFL owner, starting back in the 1960s, when he was one of the most instrumental people in securing TV deals for the league.
Even Modell himself would admit that the move to Baltimore was a black mark on his record, even if he never took full responsibility for abandoning the city of Cleveland.
He was absolutely right when he said that, back in 1999. His Ravens won a Super Bowl in Baltimore, and he definitely made a huge positive mark on the NFL as an owner.
RIP Art Modell, 1925-2012.
