Sorry, K-Rod. Your Act Is Getting Old. You're More Impressed With Yourself Than Anyone Else Is
9/27/08
K-Rod is simply ridiculous. I don't mean that in a good way, either. I've already given my opinions several times on how I feel that his saves record is one of the most meaningless records that anyone has ever talked about, but this has less to do with how overrated he is, and more to do with how absolutely excessive his post-save celebrations are. Scott Proctor's Arm touched on this back in July, but it still applies today.
Every time K-Rod picks up a save, regardless of how well he does or doesn't pitch, and regardless of how much the game even needed "saving" in the first place, he does everything he possibly can to show up the other team.
I understand some emotion on the mound. But consider his performance on September 11 against the Mariners. The Angels had already clinched their division. The game was against a pitiful team. Rodriguez came into the game with 2 runners on base (1st and 2nd) and no outs, with a 7-3 lead. He proceeded to give up 2 hits, allow one inherited runner to score, give Angels fans a heart attack, and got the "save" in a 7-4 win, even though the game was never really in jeopardy in the first place. At least, not until Rodriguez came in and loaded the bases.
So how did K-Rod react to this subpar performance? You would hope he might show some gracious humility, since he barely escaped a situation that he was partially responsible for, right?
Wrong:
It's completely ridiculous that even after 62 saves (and counting), we can still expect to see this kind of reaction.
Don't get me wrong... I'm all for athletes showing emotion, and celebrating victory. But how much is too much? If you ask me, Francisco Rodriguez is too much.
