Frank Lampard beckons Real boss Jose Mourinho to return to Chelsea
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho might not have the opportunity to join Manchester United now, but the Portuguese boss can still return to the Premier League this season. Rife rumors suggest a Chelsea return is in the books for Jose Mourinho this summer.
The former Inter Milan boss is expected to return to Chelsea, even though he recently stated that would remain loyal to Real Madrid… for now. Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard believes Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge would be a “great thing for the club”, which hasn’t been able to find strong and lasting leadership since his exit.
Frank Lampard enjoyed huge success under the wings of Jose Mourinho, who brought trophies and glory to Chelsea’s name during his tenure at the London outfit. With Rafael Benitez packing his bags for departure at the end of the season, the Chelsea hot-seat will be open once again.
“I think it would be a great thing for the club,” Frank Lampard said on Jose Mourinho’s return to Chelsea. “He is a successful manager and he would be a great thing for any club.
“It's hard to comment with the season still ongoing and with the manager not here or chosen yet. It would be easy to speculate. I have seen speculation before and a completely different manager walks through the door so you never know on that front, but he is certainly one of the greatest if not the greatest manager in world football.”
Frank Lampard is currently just one goal short of Bobby Tambling’s record for the most goals scored under a Chelsea jersey. Frank Lampard’s contract with Chelsea expires at the end of the season. Jose Mourinho’s return would definitely see him remain at Chelsea, but the England international chose to remain coy on the issue.
“I've always said that I wanted to spend all of my career here so I think everyone knows that,” Frank Lampard said. “I honestly don't know [whether Mourinho's return would help my cause].
“We have got two weeks that will decide whether our season has been a successful one or not. That is the main focus.”
Jose Mourinho’s spell at Chelsea was one of the most successful tenures in the club’s history. The Portuguese won two Premier League titles, two League Cups, an FA Cup and recorded huge success in the Champions League before his exit in 2007.
