As one the NBA’s most storied historical franchises, the Philadelphia 76ers have turned in many disappointing seasons since losing in the 2001 NBA Finals. A group of new owners, however, hopes to turn around the beleaguered Sixers franchise with widespread changes to team strategy and management.
Announced yesterday, the new ownership consortium is headlined by TV, music, and movie star Will Smith. As possibly Philly’s most famous and popular resident, the Fresh Prince ads and energy and excitement to what would have just been another boring franchise transaction. Though a lot of work still has to be done to turn the Sixers into contenders in the East, Smith should invigorate a fanbase that desperately needs it. As of today, though, it has yet to be announced whether Will Smith will bring back “Getting Jiggy With It” and perform a season opening concert at the end of the lockout, a la Jay-Z with the Nets.
