From The Armchair: Philadelphia Eagles, Week 3
I preface this by keeping in mind that the Eagles have now played 3 professional football games in 11 days 9, 15 and 20 (Brutal). Looking forward to this psuedo bye week. Who's that on the other side? The Broncos.... Umm ok then. Moving on
The Good: The fans response to Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb. The defense, for the 1st time this year it looked like they had it together. There were no frivolous PI's, they appeared to get decent pressure on Alex Smith until the second half of the 4th quarter when they got the ball on the 5 and KC drove down to get the (essentially) game clinching field goal. Shady had another good game after an especially scary moment right at the first half 2 minute warning. Jason Avant the only receiver (Tight Ends included) that bothered to show up tonight.
The Bad: Alex Henery is going to have to get it together this year. While the defense had their best effort and didn't take any penalties (I believe), I know for sure they missed a lot of tackles. Special teams fumbled a punt giving the Chiefs the ball on the 5, allowing Quintin Demps to take a kick return to the 50, he never looked that good when he played for the Birds. I won't get into the horse collar tackle by Henery I'm glad he got a stop and nobody was hurt. Hey that play where on 3rd and long (10 plus) where Donnie Avery runs a slant and gets a first down (With 8 in coverage?). There should probably have been a stop put to that after the second one. The receivers that didn't go to the University of Michigan.
The Ugly: Well for all the good we saw from 7 the first 2 games this year, I think we all thought it was a matter of time before we saw flashes of 7 past. Boy did we see them tonight. He had bad footwork. He was staring down receivers. Holding the ball too long (Maybe not his fault see, receivers comments above). Throwing the ball late when he did have receivers open. It was the playground 7 of old.
I wish there were wonderful things to say about this game, but there’s not. Here goes nothing
The Good: The Eagles fans giving Donovan McNabb and Andy Reid a nice return home. For all the grief that the Philadelphia fans get from just about every other fan base (and some of it is deserved), it was nice to see them greet Reid in a classy way to thank him for all he’s done for the organization. Also, Shady McCoy is a beast. Also good? I took the under on this game.
The Bad: Michael Vick just seemed out of sorts and it was very similar to him the past couple of years. The Chiefs put a lot of pressure on him and he didn’t handle it well. The defense wasn’t terrible, but they weren’t good enough to win the game for the Birds. Giving up that big drive at the end of the game was brutal, though there was no guarantee that the offense would have been able to generate a drive good enough to tie or win the game. But too many missed tackles and missed opportunities on the defensive side of the ball. And for the second-straight week, we get dominated on the time of possession. I don’t believe that it’s an “end all, be all” stat, but if your plan is shock & awe on the offensive side of the ball, you have to actually get (and keep) the ball.
The Ugly: Turnovers. Turnovers. TURNOVERS!@!@!#!@ Even the best teams can’t turn the ball over five times and expect to win. And we’re surely not among the best teams right now. But we play in the NFC East, so anything is possible!
