From The Armchair: New Orleans Saints Week 5

Week to week we all see how hard it is to win on the road in the NFL and well it is even that much harder to win in a place like Soldier Field in Chicago. This made the game this week just that much tougher, so to walk away with a win was another step in right direction for the resurgent Saints. Bears are an enigma and you never know which side of the Jekyll-and-Hyde Cutler you will face week to week. But, the Saints defense was able to force some key turnovers and, for most part, take away play maker Brandon Marshall, although up-and-coming WR Alshon Jeffery had a big game. Brees and company were effective, but they were not as sharp as they could have been, and that stout Bears defense was part of the problem. Saints never trailed in the game (ahem: Jen) and put together a pretty solid effort from start to finish with only a couple of hiccups along the way.

Saints fans have held a wait and see attitude on the improving defense so far this season, but even missing some key pieces to injury they have continued to play well and we are starting to believe in this unit more week by week. With another loss by the rival Falcons this week the Saints have taken a commanding early season lead in the NFC South. With all systems go for the Saints moving forward, they could run away with this division in the next few weeks if things go well but the schedule just continues to get tougher and things can change quickly in the NFL. So lets not count those chickens just yet!

Player(s) of Game:  Jimmy Graham once again had a big game with 10 catches for 135 yards. This was his 4th straight game with 100+ yards and remains the top TE in the NFL.

Work In Progress:  Saints still need to improve on the o-line as the run blocking is slowly moving forward but still has a long way to go and pass protection has been very inconsistent. Brees has not only been pressured but taken too many early season hits, so that needs to be cleaned up asap. On the defensive side of things we really need to get a bit healthier as we are pretty thin depth wise esp on the D-line and that usually becomes a problem as we get deeper into the season.

Huge win for the Saints at Soldier Field. You gotta be loving this season, Sid. Good job.
