Who will take home golf's third major? [Sunday Sports Thread]

Blog Photo - Game On! Live Sports Thread 7/21/13The picture to the right is of the Claret Jug. One golfer will win that today as the winner of the Open Championship. All the leaders have teed off this morning. Yesterday I looked at the contenders, led at the moment still by Lee Westwood. A win by Westwood would continue an incredible run for British sports in the last year, from the Olympics, to the last two Tours de France (presuming Chris Froome stays upright today), to Justin Rose at the US Open, and finally to Andy Murray at Wimbledon. Also in the mix is Tiger Woods, but so far he's struggled today on the greens (sound familiar).

What today's schedule lacks in quantity, it more than makes up in quality. There's a full baseball schedule with a lot of top pitchers taking the bump, many of them against each other. There's also the US soccer team in its Gold Cup quarterfinal. There's more racing that I thought too, as I didn't realize the Nationwide series was running today, as well as drag racing and the underrated ALMS and MotoGP. Finally, the Tour de France concludes with the traditional ride into the Champs Elysees. For the first time, the stage is going to be held at night, which should make for a spectacular visual.

Here is today’s schedule. All times are eastern and are pm unless otherwise indicated. Personal picks are in bold.

Team USA is up 2-1 early second half, but the defense is looking very shaky.

Meanwhile, the red-hot Dodgers scored 7 runs in the 2nd inning off Jordan Zimmermann.

Stenson finishes at even. Westwood bogeyed 16. Phil is the only player under par. This is over.

Mickelson played the 18 amazingly, birding it to finish at -3, shooting a 66, tied for the best round of the tournament. Phil made just one bogey today and birdied 4 of the last 6. Wow.

Phil birdied 17. Two shot lead now.

Scott bogeys 14 and drops to even. Mickelson is alone in front.

Tiger birdied 14 to get back to +1. Does he have one more push in him?

Westwood drops another shot to fall out of the lead. Mickelson (through 16) and Scott (through 13) lead at -1.

All of the sudden it's birdie city for many players. Scott now leads alone at -2, but Phil just birdied 14 to get to -1 with Westwood. Stenson and Mahan dropped back to +1. Tiger lost another shot, is +3 through 11, and looks done.

This keeps tightening up. Mickelson, Johnson, and Mahan all get to even, the latter on an eagle. Tiger though drops back to +2. Poulter is in the clubhouse at +1.

Westwood is really struggling now, and it's a three way tie for the lead at -1: Westwood, Scott, and Stenson. At +1 are Poulter, Mickelson, Zach Johnson...and Tiger, who just birdied the 9th.

Westwood needed two shots to get out of a bunker in 7. He has a two shot lead on Stenson, but that won't last much longer. Adam Scott just birdied to get back to even and is solo 3rd. Poulter, Mickelson, and Zach Johnson are +1. Tiger is +2.

Westwood saved bogey, so still one up.

good call.

Ian Poulter is white hot right now. He's 5 under on the day, and is now even for the championship through 13 holes.

Tiger is the exact opposite. He's dropped two shots on the first 4 holes and is now +1.
