Garay reveals United snub as Barcelona appear with interest
Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay has revealed that he was at the cusp of joining Manchester United last summer. The Argentinean center back claims the Red Devils had shown a lot of interest in recruiting him, but Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure from Old Trafford brought the whole matter to an end.
David Moyes replaced Sir Alex Ferguson during the summer transfer window. Consequently, the new Old Trafford boss only signed in Marouane Fellaini from his former club Everton. Garay, who has been closely linked to Manchester United in the past, has received little attention from the new Old Trafford boss since.
The defender has decided to stay in Portugal, but the 27-year-old does have dreams of moving into a bigger club. The Premier League champions were reportedly in negotiations over his switch after the season ended, but the matter never got concluded in time.
Garay believes he would have been playing under different colors if Sir Alex Ferguson had stayed at Manchester United.
“I believed I was going to join Manchester United in the summer and the deal was nearly closed, but finally Benfica did not accept the offer,” Garay told the Daily Mirror. “I believe the exit of Ferguson has influenced the deal. Moyes did not believe in me as much but that's not a problem.
“I am happy at Benfica and have a lot of dreams and ambitions for this season. Now I only think about the present which is Benfica but it's never possible to discard anything in the future.”
Meanwhile, Barcelona president Sandro Rosell and other officials are also looking into the matter of signing Garay. According to reports, Barcelona might swoop up for Garay during the January transfer window.
Barcelona desperately needs to find Gerard Pique a new partner at the back. Garay seems to be the right choice, but the transfer depends on the asking price. It is believed that Benfica are going to ask in between the 20-25 million pounds.
