Gareth Bale claims Real Madrid move is “once in a lifetime opportunity”
Opportunity doesn’t come knocking twice, but in Real Madrid’s case players wait for the coveted offer at their doorstep. Gareth Bale expressed similar sentiment in an interview to BT Sport this weekend.
The prized Welsh forward said that no force in the world could have stopped him from joining Real Madrid once he was aware of their interest in him. The former Tottenham Hotspur attacking midfielder called the opportunity a “once in a lifetime” move.
Bale revealed that the desire to acquire major silverware drove him towards joining Real Madrid. The 24-year-old Wales international moved to Bernabeu from Tottenham Hotspur for a world-record fee of £85.3 million, breaking the record of Real Madrid’s crown jewel Cristiano Ronaldo.
The transfer saga expanded over three months, with English club twice denying reports of a potential move to Real Madrid.
“It's once in a lifetime and I don't think you can turn down a team like that,” Bale said. “For me I want to be playing (in the) Champions League but also winning trophies. At a club like that they're out to win every trophy they're involved in. That's exactly what I want to do.
“When Real Madrid comes in it's a once in a lifetime opportunity. I think if I didn't take it I would probably regret it for the rest of my life.”
Bale’s move to Real Madrid has upset a group of Tottenham Hotspur supporters. However, the Bale hopes his fans will continue to love him and hold in with high esteem.
“The fans have been absolutely unbelievable with me," he said. "They've supported me through the bad times and believed in me,” Bale added. “The nights they were cheering my name, I will never forget the great European nights at White Hart Lane.
“They were amazing and Tottenham will always have a place in my heart. I hope they understand Real Madrid is an absolute massive, massive club and they will understand and respect my decision.”
