Gary Neville urges Wayne Rooney to stay at Man Utd
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has urged Wayne Rooney to stay at Old Trafford. Gary Neville believes Wayne Rooney should extend his contract with Manchester United, since it is the best place for him to shine.
The rebellious wantaway striker has been linked to top notch clubs from around Europe over the past couple of weeks. Arsenal, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are eager to acquire his services, but Manchester United yet hold the leverage since the England international is still bound by contract.
The leverage Manchester United has over Wayne Rooney could become an unbearable weight as well; since the striker is being paid over £250,000 per week in salary and could leave the club for free next year. Therefore, Manchester United officials have got to convince Wayne Rooney to stay or sell him rather than lose him for free when the contract expires.
According to reports Wayne Rooney, who handed in his second transfer request in three years after Sir Alex Ferguson retired last month, just recently held talks over a contract renewal with the new Old Trafford boss David Moyes.
Interestingly, David Moyes and Wayne Rooney are not on the best of terms. David Moyes sold Wayne Rooney to Manchester United following a quandary back when he was the manager of Everton. Since his arrival at Old Trafford, David Moyes has offered an olive branch to Wayne Rooney but the forward seems uninterested in accepting it.
Gary Neville believes Wayne Rooney can see his ambitions fulfilled if he stays commits to Manchester United.
“I played with Wayne for many years,” Gary Neville said. “He’s a fantastic footballer. Personally, with my allegiances, I’d never recommend anyone leave United because I believe it is a great stage to play football and you can achieve what you want there.
“I’ve seen David Beckham and other big players leave United and it really is something that comes down to the individual and the club. I’ve seen Ryan Giggs, when he was 27, linked to Inter Milan, Juventus and AC Milan and stay.”
Gary Neville also believes there should be no surprise over Manchester United’s interest in Everton defender Leighton Baines. The English fullback has been linked to a couple of clubs this season, but Everton’s high price tag on Leighton Baines has kept his at the Merseyside so far.
“I’ve seen a lot of the speculation over the last few days about Leighton,” Gary Neville said. “He had a fantastic season last year and was brilliant for Everton. He’s been a great performer for the last few years and it’s inevitable that he will be linked with the top clubs in the Premier League.”
