Joe Torre doesn't care about black people. Here we go again. This may be old news by now, but I couldn't let this pass. In an interview with Andrea Kramer for HBO Real Sports that will air Tuesday night, Gary Sheffield opened his mouth and more racist accusations came out.
Among the more controversial comments by Sheffield were those regarding race. Kremer reports that Sheffield thinks black and white players are coached differently. Asked to name teams on which that occurs. Sheffield quickly answered: "The Yankees."Sheffield didn't stop there.
Said Sheffield: "I know when I was there the couple of blacks that were there, every one of them had an issue with the organization."
Asked to specify whether the "organization" meant owner George Steinbrenner, general manager Brian Cashman or Torre, Sheffield said: "They had an issue with Joe Torre. They weren't treated like everybody else. I got called out in a couple of meetings that I thought were unfair."
According to Sheffield, Torre used him to get a message across to the team. White players, Sheffield said, were brought in to Torre's office and "treated like a man." Sheffield said he did not.
Sheffield also said that Derek Jeter "ain't all the way black," that he has never used steroids because "steroids is something you shoot in your butt," and that he will "more than likely" agree to meet with George Mitchell in the former senator's investigation of steroids. Jeter and Torre declined to respond to Sheffield's remarks.Obviously, I have no idea whether these assessments are accurate, but given a decision to agree between Gary Sheffield or respected baseball legend Joe Torre I'm picking the latter every time. If this wasn't Sheffield, who seemingly has an axe to grind with MLB, this story could pick up a steam. Instead, this should blow over until his next accusation.
"I tell myself every offseason I'm not going to say anything crazy. I'm just going to have a peaceful season . . . Can't do it. I'm cut from a different cloth."Indeed.
