Is Geno Smith an idiot for not studying game film of Darrelle Revis? Or is he a genius?
At first glance, the news that he didn't bother studying game film of Darrelle Revis seems to imply the former.
Is he being lazy and just trying to take shortcuts in his NFL debut? Maybe. Or maybe he really is smarter than we all think, as some folks have already suggested.
When a rookie is your starting QB, you often try to simplify the game plan a bit. In that case, with a QB like Geno Smith, are you really trying to get him to exploit small weaknesses in Darrelle Revis' game?
Of course not. You want Smith staying as far away from Revis as possible. You want him to completely avoid that side of the field, if humanly possible. The more he tries to study Revis' game and try to find slight weaknesses, the more he's wasting time that could be spent studying things that he might actually have the ability to exploit, because Revis isn't one of those things.
Also, most of the tape on Revis would feature him in a Jets uniform, playing within the Jets' offense. That's not terribly relevant now that he's in Tampa Bay.
This might actually be an ingenious move on Smith and the Jets' part. Why bother studying tape on Revis if you're going to avoid him like the plague anyway?
One might argue that it was a terrible PR move to come out and say this publicly, but the actual decision to ignore game film of Darrelle Revis might be the smartest thing the Jets have done all year.
