George Brett Pine Tar Incident 25th Anniversary
No Video? Don't Worry, Johnny Bench And San Diego Chicken Have It Covered

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the infamous George Brett pine tar incident at Yankee Stadium.

On July 24th, 1983, Brett launched a two-run, two-out homer in the top of the 9th to give the Royals a 5-4 lead over New York. Before Brett even finished rounding the bases, the easily irritated Yankee manager Billy Martin was out complaining to home plate umpire Tim McClelland.

McClelland examined the bat briefly with the other umpires, and then as we can all remember, motioned towards the Royals bench that Brett was ejected. No home run.

An epic tantrum ensued. I'd love to post the actual video of the event, but the powers that be at Major League Baseball have wiped it clean. I wonder why?

No worries. There's an even better video thanks to the old show "The Baseball Bunch," Johnny Bench and the San Diego Chicken recreate the pine tar incident better than anyone could. Outstanding detail paid to the 'staches.

If Brett ran the base paths like he did getting from the dugout to home he would have been 30 - 30 guy easy.

Here is Boski's "I remember Yankee Stadium" moment. While a young lad, my family went back to NY to visit relatives. During the two weeks we were there we caught some games. I was lucky to catch games at Yankee, Shea and Fenway during the trip. We caught two games at Yankee Stadium. Sadly they were the night before and the night after this blessed event. Sadly I was stuck in New Jersey away from a TV.  So that concludes my lame remembrance kind like my lame comments.

Great article...What is MLB Advanced Media's problem??? Let the masses upload MLB videos, so we can all reminisce about this moment...On second thought, I think I enjoy watching the "Baseball Bunch" version better...Especially when Rick Dempsey is arguing though he has large amounts of pine-tar on his shirt...Then, the bat sticks to the plate and the SD Chicken runs away with it! Thanks for bringing some much needed laughter to my day Jason! The Baseball Bunch aired during my Little League games....

Wow! Thanks for sharing that memory. I remember what a big deal it was at the time, and when the American League President finally forced the Royals and Yankees to complete the game Billy Martin arguing that there was no way of knowing that Brett or the other runner had touched all of the bases. That is one of the stranger moments in baseball history.

I am glad this was reversed. But I have never seen a player with that much chaw in his mouth not spit when he was yelling at the ump.
